This week’s mailbag is a little bit late, and I apologize for that. I had some stuff to get done this week, and I’ve started doing a new project. Not to mention that I have been a little sick, so I’ve gotten a lot of extra sleep lately. Not that it has anything to do with this. Anyway, let’s get to it, some interesting letters came in this week.

Q: When the list of eligible songs for the “Best Original Song” Academy Award was released, “The Call” was there but “This is Home” and the others weren’t. Can you explain this?

-Skulblaka_Shur’tugal

Paul: Good question. I’m not sure the rules on this, and even the official site for the Oscars doesn’t have the rules for eligibility posted in this category. There must have been a reason, but I just can’t find it. Can anyone else?

Q: I want to say something about the most recent mailbag; Skulbaka had a question about Fox’s handling of Narnia, and mentioned that Eragon was a poor film compared to the book. While I haven’t read Eragon and haven’t seen the film, so I don’t know anything about it, I do know that Fox has handled STar Wars quite well (which I believe you mentioned). HOWEVER, Fox will not be responsible for what’s in the script, am I right? Michael Apted and the screenwriter(s) are responsible for what goes into the script; the studios (Walden and Fox) will handle the distribution, marketing and publicity.

I also wanted to ask a question: since Disney has bailed on the films, do you think there will be better publicity for Voyage of the Dawn treader, like there was for Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe?

-Aravis Kenobi

Paul: Good additional points about the Dawn Treader script, and you are correct about that. I think that there’s a good chance for better publicity than Prince Caspian had. 20th Century Fox wants to make this a franchise and they don’t want to do one Narnia only to see it fail. Expect to see a lot in the way of publicity, this time around.

Q: Am I the only one who noticed the Narnia flag (rampant lion) on the opening shot of the Disney castle in the movie theater version of Prince Caspian? I was rather disappointed when it didn’t make the DVD.

Kelley

Paul: Now that you mention it, I sort of remember seeing it. Anyone have verification on this? I’m not sure I can find it. It is interesting if it really isn’t on the DVD. If I wasn’t watching the Ocean’s trilogy at the moment, I’d check the Blu-ray.

Q: Any idea on when we’ll hear casting announcements?
Do you think/know if TCF/Walden will market VDT to faith groups?

Mike

Paul: Casting announcements, if filming indeed starts in late July, some time this month. Keep your eyes on NarniaFans.com for these! I think that that Walden will market VDT to faith groups again, and hopefully with as much stress as they did LWW. The biggest problem is that the rest of the Narnia films don’t have as public a symbolic reference to Christ. Nor the name recognition. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe could have been released under that name alone. Calling it The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was pure marketing so that when future films in the series were released, people could see the name Narnia and remember the last film on the weight of that name alone.

And that’s it for this week’s mailbag. Keep sending us e-mails, and we’ll keep answering. If you have any answers, feel free to comment below, or send us an e-mail and we’ll post it in future mailbags.

I was up at Barnes and Noble today, doing some writing and decided to take a stretch break and browse through the music and see if anything caught my fancy. Right in front on the Disney movie music section was a compilation album, Disney Box Office Hits. The CD features not one, not two but THREE songs from the Chronicles of Narnia films.

The songs included were “Can’t Take It In” by Imogene Heap from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and “The Call”by Regina Spektor and ” This is Home” by Switchfoot from Prince Caspian. Other artists featured include Jamie Cullum, Five For Fighting, Peter Gabriel, Sheryl Crow, Miley Cyrus, John Travolta and singer/songwriter legend, James Taylor.

As this is a pop-complaition album, it gears more towards adult co-pop music and features no highlights from some of the film scores. The only instrumental songs included on the album are techno remixes of the theme from The Incredibles, and “Jack’s Suite” from Pirates of the Caribbean. For fans of motion picture scores this may be one to pass on, especially if they already own the soundtracks for the Narnia films.

However, for adults looking for a quick CD to pop in the car on those car rides, especially parents with children, this may be one to consider as it can provide a nice respite from the usual mind numbingly vapid children’s music they are forced to endure. Best of all ,since it features songs from a good number or recent Disney films, that means there is something for every one to listen to. Provided of course you can stomach a trans-techno remix of a great music score, and tolerate one minuscule ( but well written) Miley Cyrus song to make it worth it.

The track list is below:

1: Ever,Ever After ( Enchanted)-Carrie Underwood

2:Down To Earth ( Wall-E)- Peter Gabriel

3: Real Gone ( Cars)- Sheryl Crow

4:Little Wonders ( Meet the Robinsons)- Rob Thomas

5: This Is Home( The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian)- Switchfoot

6: Breakaway ( Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagment)- Kelly Clarkson

7: Cant’ Take It In ( The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe)- Imogen Heap

By now, whether you are Christian or not, you have heard at least one hit song from the beloved Christian rock band Switchfoot.

By now, whether you are Christian or not, you have heard at least one hit song from the beloved Christian rock band Switchfoot.

While all the band members are Christian, they prefer to be known as just a rock band because they say their music contains broad themes that everyone can enjoy, whether it be “Meant to Live,” “Dare You to Move” or their newest hit single, “Awakening.”

The San Diego-based group now has a new original song out called, “This is Home,” which plays in “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian,” the latest “Narnia” film which this past weekend seized the box-office crown, with $55 million in ticket sales over its debut weekend.

The Switchfoot song is featured during the end credits of the film, and appears on the Original Walt Disney Records Soundtrack CD, which released May 13.

The Christian Post caught up with Jerome Fontamillas, who is often found jamming on the guitar or keyboards for the band, to discuss the new “Narnia” song and to get the 411 on Switchfoot’s latest projects.

The following are excerpts taken from the interview:

CP: Tell me a little bit about “This is Home” – Switchfoot’s new song, recorded for the movie “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.” How does the song tell the journey of these four kids?

Fontamillas: Well, the whole idea of the song – if you read the Chronicles the series from beginning to end – it’s this idea that the place you live now is not the place you are really meant to be. You feel this is just a passing by and there is something bigger for you beyond this place. This song has a longing to go to that place. ‘This is Home’ is about longing to be in the place where you belong and destined to be.

CP: What do you think is the destiny of these four kids?

Fontamillas: Well, I’m sure for the four kids, Narnia is their place to be. But you know, you can relate it to you. ‘This is not my place. I belong in a place bigger than this.’

CP: Now, have you read the books?

Fontamillas: Yes, I have … when I was a kid.

CP: Was it surreal to work on a story you read when you were younger?

Fontamillas: Yeah. It was surreal to be a part of a work like this. Reading C.S. Lewis all my life, it’s an honor and a privilege to work on something like this. So when they called us up and said, ‘Hey can you work on a song for the movie?’ we were like pretty floored. We were like, ‘Really? For Chronicles of Narnia? That’s amazing.’

CP: A lot of your songs are known to contain messages that Christians can relate to. Do you see any such messages in this song?

Fontamillas: Oh, yeah. I mean a lot of our songs have Christian themes because C.S. Lewis is a big part of us. We read a lot of it at work, so a lot of the themes he had put in his book, you can see them in a lot of our songs.

We have a song called, ‘Meant to Live.’ The idea is that we are meant to live for something more, something bigger than where we are at.

We have a song called “This is your life,” where you are talking about ‘Is this all there is or is there something big you could be living for?’ And a lot of C.S. Lewis themes are in that area.

CP: How about for this song?

Fontamillas: ‘This is Home,’ like I said before … this song has a longing to be in a place where you are destined to be at.

On Wendsday, May 14th, Ben Barnes appeared on NBC’s “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” promoting Prince Caspian. He talked briefly about his audition and acting expierience, his family and shared a clip from the film.

The clip does feature Peter Pevensie and Prince Caspian dueling. The duel itself makes a lot more sense when you actually watch the clip. Simply put, neither of them look like what the other expects.

Switchfoot also appeared and performed “This is Home” from the Prince Caspian soundtrack.

Switchfoot’s song This Is Home now has a music video. We still hope to have a higher resolution version sometime this week, but here it is, for those that can’t wait:

Switchfoot – This is Home: Lyrics

I’ve got my memories
They’re always inside of me
But I can’t go back
Back to how it was
I believe it now
I’ve seen too much
But I can’t go back
Back to how it was
Created for a place I’ve never known

[Chorus]
This is Home
Now I’m finally where I belong
Where I belong
Yeah, this is home
I’ve been searching for a place of my own
Now I’ve found it,
Yeah this is home
Yeah, this is home

Belief over misery
I’ve seen the enemy
And I won’t go back
Back to how it was
And I’ve got my heart set on what happens next
I’ve got my eyes wide and it’s not over yet
We are miracles
And we’re not alone

[Chorus]

And now after all my searching
After all my questions
I’m gonna call it home
I’ve got a brand new mindset
I can finally see the sunset
I’m gonna call it home

[Chorus]

Now I know, Yeah this is home
I’ve come too far
No, I won’t go back
This is home

The multi-Platinum selling rock band Switchfoot has recorded a new original song, “This Is Home,” for the highly anticipated Walt Disney Studios and Walden Media May 16 theatrical release, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. The song will be featured during the end credits of the film, and will appear on the Original Walt Disney Records Soundtrack CD releasing on May 13.

Switchfoot recently taped a companion music video for “This Is Home” in Los Angeles with director Brandon Dickerson who filmed Switchfoot’s most recent video, “Awakening,” from its current, acclaimed studio album, Oh! Gravity..

“We are so honored to be a part of the Prince Caspian film with ‘This Is Home,’” says Switchfoot frontman Jon Foreman. “The Narnia stories have a really special place in my brother Tim and my lives. Our dad used to read these to us at bedtime when we were boys. Our imaginations were shaped on these amazing novels.

“‘This Is Home’ was inspired by the book after re-reading it for the opportunity to write for the film,” continues Foreman. “I am always taken by [C. S.] Lewis’ ability to write about the bittersweet beauty in this world; this home we aren’t really made for but is the place we work out our humanity in the midst of our longing for our true home.”

“We are encouraged to continue our collaboration with Walt Disney Studios with the new Switchfoot song ‘This is Home’ for the new Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian film,” says Peter York, EMI CMG Label Group president. “The band continues to create thought provoking music and has been truly inspired by the C. S. Lewis series. It felt likea natural fit, and it’s an honor to continue to work with the Music/Creative team at Walt Disney Studios.”

“Going back to our first Narnia film, ‘The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe,’ Switchfoot was at the top of our creative list of artists whose sound and artistry we felt was a perfect fit,” said Mitchell Leib, President of Music and Soundtracks for Walt Disney Studios. “When approached for ‘Prince Caspian,’ Jon Foreman had a concise read on the story and delivered a stellar, important composition and record, which we feel reflects our film brilliantly. We are proud to have Switchfoot involved and to be working with our friends at EMI CMG once again.”

In conjunction with local market promotions around the film designed to build excitement toward the release of the new “Narnia” movie, EMI CMG Label Group will release “This Is Home” to AC and CHR Christian radio as Red Light Management/Entertainment works the single at mainstream AC and Triple A radio formats. Fans can also see the band debut the song live nationwide tonight (April 23) between 8 – 10 p.m. (ET) on the Gospel Music Channel television network as part of the 39th Annual GMA Dove Awards telecast.

Erin wrote in to let us know: Andy Barron who is a good friend of the band commented on the boards about the video and this is what he said, “that little youtube clip didn’t even get to my favorite part yet!” awesome! Thanks, Erin!

Last night we filmed the video for a song called “This is Home” written for the new Narnia movie. I think it will turn out great- we rented a subway station in LA (including a subway train!) sweet.

Highlights include:
-wind blown bits of paper flying at us at an incredible rate
-surprise folks walking around the video, (ie: Keith Tutt and more…)
-drew playing a jazz master
-romey playing an old yamaha CP 70, (after he battled a full day of cancelled flights to get there)
-got to see the daylights and co.
-worked with brandon dickerson again, (he’s such a great guy…)
-got to shoot a crazy boom shot at hollywood and highland on a sunday night. yes. so weird and fun.

——————————————————–
The whole thing wrapped up a few hours ago in the wee hours of the morn. so now I’m here at LAX drifting in and out of sleep.
