Thursday, September 10th, 2009

According to an article at contactmusic, Skandar Keynes gave Ben Barnes a fat lip while filming earlier this week.  Ben said that it happened during the sword fighting that we reported on earlier in the week, while nursing his wounds from the battle.  It’s not a major injury and he’s likely to be back at work on the film soon, if he isn’t already.

New Castle and Village Rise at Barrandov

Sunday, July 15th, 2007

During the month of May, a castle courtyard, complete with gate, towers and drawbridge, was constructed at Barrandov for “Prince Caspian” – the second film in the Chronicles of Narnia adventure series. An adjoining village, which is connected to the castle by a sixty-meter long bridge, is currently being completed. In order to build the one-hundred meter long and nineteen meter high castle and the village, which measures ninety meters by eighty meters in area, Barrandov’s Sets Division used 670 cubic meters of lumber, consisting of planks, logs, posts, and boards in addition to 23,000 square meters of wood panels.

“We started work on the construction of the castle and village about six months ago. Every day, an average of eighty people worked on the project and an additional thirty were preparing sets in our workshops. We had to import 2,500 square meters of original stone tiles for the castle courtyard all the way from India,” according to Ing. Jiri Matolin, Director of the Sets Division. “Some scenes have already been shot in the castle courtyard,” he added.

In addition to wood and metal support scaffolding, 9,000 square meters of plaster imitations of stone blocks were used for constructing the house walls in the village, which cost a total of approximately 15 million Czech crowns. An entire range of sets were constructed at Barrandov for “Prince Caspian.” In addition to the castle, bridge and village built on the backlot, castle interiors were also created. Stage No. 6 was the site of an enormous, decorative twelve meter high set representing a mountain cave. Stage No. 8 – the new MAX soundstage, is the site of a mountain forest, complete with waterfall and small lake.

The continuation of the narrative family saga about children in a fairytale kingdom started filming at Barrandov in April under the direction of Andrew Adamson and shooting will continue up until this August. The film’s budget is expected to exceed 100 million dollars and, in addition to the Czech Republic, some scenes will be shot at locations in New Zealand, Poland, and Slovenia. This blockbuster, which is originating in the Czech Republic as a co-production between Walden Media and Walt Disney Pictures, is scheduled to premiere next May. In addition to Barrandov, other sites in the Czech Republic will be used for filming exteriors, including locations around Usti nad Labem.

“It is the largest project at Barrandov since 2004, when we hosted filming of Charles Dickens’s novel “Oliver Twist” under the direction of Roman Polanski. ‘Prince Caspian‘ will be shot at traditional Stage Nos. 6 and 7 as well as at the new Max Stage Nos. 8, 9, and 10,” according to Vladimir Kuba, General Director and Chairman of the Board of Directors for Barrandov Studios. He added that, in addition to the Sets Division, the film’s producers will also take advantage of the services offered by the Costumes and Props Department and the Film Laboratories.

While “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe“, which is the first film in the series, was partially shot at Barrandov in 2005, the second volume of the narrative family saga of children’s adventures in fairy land will originate mostly in Prague. The first movie about Narnia primarily used exterior mountain town sets. This sequel requires mostly forest settings and will understandably make the most use out of the new soundstages and the large backlot situated on the Studios’ premises.

Prince Caspian“, which is the second in C. S. Lewis’s seven-volume series set in the fantasy world of Narnia, takes place just one year after the events of the first film. In Narnia however, 1300 years have passed. The children, who in the first picture, moved from wartime London to the countryside and discovered the entrance to a magic world at the back of an old wardrobe, return to the land of elves and talking animals – the magic world known as Narnia. They find out that entire centuries have passed since their last visit and once again find themselves in the midst of a power struggle. Prince Caspian, whose rightful claim to the throne has been usurped, is putting an army together in order to free the country from the rule of a false king, who just happens to be his uncle. The children also take up the weapons they received as gifts during their last visit. In the end however, the future of the entire country is decided on the basis of a battle between two men.

Narnia land is now in the Barrandov Studio in Prague

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

Prague Barrandov Studio is busy now to create the perfect requisites (sets) for the American film The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. The film is being shot here from April to August and it costs over 100 million USD.

According to the director of Barrandov Studio, this film has been the biggest project there since Roman Polanski’s film Oliver Twist in 2004. The studios now contains a castle with a large courtyard and a big gate, towers and a drawbridge. The main stars of the film, Georgie Henley, Skandar Keynes, William Moseley and Anna Popplewell will also shoot in caves or in a wood with a waterfall and a small lake, all made in Barrandov studios.

About 110 people has been working on the requisites for more than 6 months. The Czech premiere of the film is planned for May 2008.

Two Young Travelers Visit Narnia Set

Saturday, May 19th, 2007

Set in New ZealandTwo young world travelers have spotted the filming of Prince Caspian! They’ve been to many places, and have seen many things. Here’s their report of stumbling upon some filming of Narnia while traveling New Zealand.

There’s a little place called Paradise near Glenorchy, just north of Queenstown and this too was another LOTR location. The problem is- the road to paradise is hard to find and extremely treacherous at times. We crept slowly along a dirt track for ages, hoping not to damage our vehicle and just as we decided that we should turn and go back we approached a sign.

We decided to continue for a little longer and eventually came to a large field filled with vans, tents, and cables. Across from this was a group of horsemen in costume with a young man in their midst. The young rider was dressed differently and clearly stood out as the star of the show. A large camera followed the riders as they rode across the field. We asked someone what was being filmed and they said it was a little New Zealand documenary. This was said with a smirk and it was clear from the costumes and size of production that this was no small documentary.

We cheekily took some photos and then drove on a bit looking for the LOTR site. We think we found the site but the road became extremely rough and eventually we came to a stream that blocked our way.

We headed back towards the filming and passed an old man who had the exciting job of stopping cars from getting into shot. He was happy to inform us that they were filming the new Narnia movie- Prince Caspian! The young horseman was clearly Caspian. The old man waved us through and we drove past while they were still filming. So when the movie comes out and you are watching a scene with Prince Caspian and maybe a dozen horsemen in a field, look out for a bright orange spaceship in the background!

See the pictures along with more images of their adventures through both Middle-Earth and Narnia here, as well as their visit to Tatooine elsewhere in their blog.

Ultimate Narnia Fan to Visit Prince Caspian Set Soon

Friday, April 20th, 2007

The winner of Narnia.com’s Ultimate Narnia Fan contest has posted on the forums that she will be leaving for the set very soon. She writes:

Hi everybody. It looks like I’ll be headed to Prague the week of May 7. Thanks for all the great questions and suggestions. I’m sorting and grouping them, so hopefully I’ll be able to find a great question, no matter who I end up talking to (everything is “subject to availability of cast and crew”). I’ll let you know when I get back, but be warned up front – I won’t be able to talk about the set visit at all (who I talked to, what I saw, etc.) until after the production blog posts on Narnia.com. That’s just part of the rules for the contest winner.

Once again, Congratulations QueenHelen! You’re living a dream of mine!

Prince Caspian Set Video

Wednesday, March 14th, 2007

Here is a video from the set of Prince Caspian featuring what looks like Georgie Henley (Lucy Pevensie) with slightly longer hair. She’ll be reprising her role from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in 2008’s Prince Caspian.

This video appears to have been shot from a car near the set. It was actually shot by Steven Hofmann. Awesome work, Steven!

IGN Set Report: Photorealistic Animated Characters

Friday, December 3rd, 2004

“It was essential. A lot of our characters, principal characters: Aslan, Mr. and Mrs. Beaver, don’t actually exist, so it basically is an animated film within a live action film. When I say animated, it’s not gonna look like a cartoon obviously, it’s photorealistic, but the characters are essentially animated.”

The casting of the voice of Aslan is still a great mystery, at least for those of us on the outside. We weren’t able to get any scoops on set, but Adamson and Johnson both indicated that the rumors circulating so far (Sean Connery, Morgan Freeman and James Earl Jones) were way off-base. “We have some ideas. I don’t think it’s important that it’s an A-List star. On the other hand, you know, I’ve said this about the Shrek principals, because everyone asks how important it was that they were stars, and the answer I have for that is, it wasn’t important that they were stars, but there’s a reason they were stars. It’s because they’re very good at what they do. In this case, I’ll be casting according to somebody who’s just appropriate for the role. I don’t have a strong opinion about whether they’re an A-List star or not. It’s a short list. There’s, you know, it’s obviously too early to say anything, and it’s something that I’ve been kind of postponing to some degree, because I want to make sure we get the right person.”
