The Dawn Treader – Ropes and Two Masts?

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

Since last week’s pictures, The Dawn Treader has changed slightly. We now have pictures of the ship with the other mast attached, as well as rope connecting the masts and the prow to the ship. It looks just about ready for the prime time, with the sail to be the next additions, from the looks of things. This boat has turned out to be far better than I had imagined it, and December of 2010 can’t come fast enough for me. It’s looking like The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is going to be an epic adventure to remember.  I can’t wait to see the first footage from the film in a teaser.  Hopefully we get a good look at the ship as depicted on film.

Dawn Treader Castle Set Pictures?

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

There seems to be a lot of pictures coming from the set this time around.  This round of pictures features a castle set on the shoreline, as well as some pieces of what might be part of the castle still in construction.  I have other thoughts though, as all of these sets cannot be for the beginning of the film alone.  Perhaps some of the set pieces are from other locations in the story.  The Voyage of the Dawn Treader takes place over many islands and there are other buildings that they come into contact with along the way.  Perhaps it’s the magician’s house?  We’ll have to wait and see!

Narnia Production Blog #6: Ben Barnes

Ben Barnes Narnia Blog:

Barnes: Hi, I’m Ben Barnes and I am Prince Caspian and welcome to Narnia.com. I was a massive Narnia fan as a kid. I found my old copy of Prince Caspian when I auditioned for the movie and to find out that I was actually going to be in it was a dream come true. As far as playing the title role, you have to play every moment as truth and hope that those moments translate into something that the audience can really become involved in and really get behind Caspian. I think Andrew’s imagination is just entirely limitless. And whatever your ideas about a particular moment of a scene in general, his will top it. I think Prince Caspian is going to be huge. It’s going to be really epic.

Picking up where we left off on Tuesday: After a brief stop outside Mr. Tumnus’ house …

Mr. Tumnus' Door

It was time to visit the prop & costume gallery portion of Disney-MGM’s “Journey into Narnia: Creating the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” walk-through exhibit. Which seemed to mostly focus on the White Witch. For here on display was Jadis’ sleigh …

Jadis’ evil minions were also represented. Here you see a clay sculpt of a minotaur, which was used in preparation for “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” ’s big CG-laden battle scenes.

LWW Invades McDonald’s Happy Meals

Wednesday, December 14th, 2005

Characters from the new Walt Disney Pictures/Walden Media live action theatrical release The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe are climbing through the enchanted wardrobe into McDonald’s Happy Meals and Mighty Kids Meals beginning December 16, 2005 through January 12, 2006. McDonald’s guests will receive one of eight characters and a specially designed pop-up diorama inspired by the film, with the purchase of a Happy Meal(R) or Mighty Kids Meal(R), at participating restaurants nationwide, while supplies last.

Each McDonald’s Happy Meal featuring The Chronicles of Narnia includes an articulated action figure and interactive pop-up book that provides a richly detailed play environment to bring the film to life. Lucy Pevensie and the Wardrobe features a charming Lucy action figure. The door of Lucy’s wardrobe diorama opens so she can enter the mystical world of Narnia on the reverse side. Mr. Tumnus and his Home includes Tumnus, who sports a scarf that doubles as a whistle, and a detailed pop-up book depicting his wintry home. Edmund Pevensie and the White Witch features Edmund and a pop-up sleigh with a 3-D White Witch inside, led by four reindeer. The Mr. Beaver and his Home diorama depicts Mr. Beaver’s abode with pop up furniture — press Mr. Beaver’s tail and he flaps it up and down.

The White Witch and her Castle features The White Witch, Jadis, who raises her wand as if to cast a spell when the lever in her back is pushed, and an elaborate diorama of her castle and dungeon. Susan Pevensie and the Wolves includes a picturesque winter scene diorama with pop-up wolves and Peter with his sword.

Touch the lever on Susan’s back and she raises her magic horn to her lips. Aslan and the Return of Spring features a pop-up dimensional tent for Aslan — press the back of his mane to open and close his mighty jaws. Rounding out the elaborate collection is Peter Pevensie and Aslan’s Army. Peter leads his troops with articulated arms and legs, and the prelude to battle diorama features a pop-up satyr, unicorn, and horse Peter can ride.

In theatres December 9, Walt Disney Pictures/Walden Media’s The Chronicles of Narnia is a live-action film based on the book, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe — one of seven novels in the popular children’s fantasy book series by C.S. Lewis. Originally published in 1950, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe follows the adventure of the four Pevensie siblings who enter the world of Narnia though a magical wardrobe while playing ‘hide and seek’ in the country home of an elderly professor.

McDonald’s guests now have the opportunity to enjoy additional food choices with their Happy Meals and Mighty Kids Meals including Apple Dippers (fresh, peeled apple slices) served with low-fat caramel dipping sauce, and beverage choices including 100% pure Minute Maid apple juice and low-fat white and chocolate Milk Jugs, served in easy to handle containers.

Children of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in the spotlight

Wednesday, October 12th, 2005

The four child stars of upcoming movie The Chronicles of Narnia have appeared in London’s Leicester Square. The youngsters play the Pevensie children in The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, which hopes to rival Harry Potter at the Christmas box office. Adapted from the CS Lewis book, the film also features Tilda Swinton as the White Witch and Liam Neeson as the voice of Aslan the lion. In the story, they discover a wardrobe gateway to the snowy land of Narnia.

Skandar Keynes, William Moseley, Anna Popplewell and Georgie HenleyWilliam Moseley, 18, from Gloucestershire, plays Peter, and Skandar Keynes, 14, from London, is Edmund. Keynes is from the same school as Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe.

The youngest of the four, Georgie Henley, 10, from Ilkley, West Yorkshire, who stars as Lucy, is making her professional acting debut.

“This is my first movie so it’s quite overwhelming for me, but it’s amazing,” she said. “I don’t want to sound selfish or anything, but I kind of like being in the spotlight. It’s nice to be noticed.”

Sixteen-year-old Anna Popplewell, who played Colin Firth’s daughter in the film Girl with a Pearl Earring, is Susan. Her sister Lulu appeared in Love Actually and her brother Freddie was in recent film Finding Neverland.

My trip inside The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe
by Lauren Packer

Setting the scene

Skandar Keynes, William Moseley, Anna Popplewell and Georgie HenleyThere were lots of photographers crowded around the Narnia scene which had been set up in the gardens. But to our disappointment, it was really just a wardrobe. I was at least expecting some snow!

Hanging Around

I got a taste of what it is really like being a TV reporter, as the kids were quite late! There was a lot of hanging around involved, so we spent some time watching the mad (but quite frightening) pigeons in Leicester Square.

But that wasn’t all I was doing – I was actually planning my interview!! I thought about the questions I would ask the actors and spoke to the Newsround assistant producer about what shots we would use.

Then we all got a bit of a shock when Wallace and Gromit popped out of the Odeon cinema for a chat. Obviously, they were just people dressed up as the characters but they were fun!

Suddenly there was a lot of hustle and bustle and we could see the actors coming in the distance. At this point, I was feeling nervous because I really didn’t want to mess up the interview! But I didn’t need to worry because they were all really friendly, they were calm as well. They were just like normal kids – they weren’t starry at all.

Screen Magic

WardrobeI asked them how they felt about becoming famous and they didn’t really know how to answer because they said they’re not famous yet! Also, I asked Anna, who plays Susan, if the Snow Queen was scary; she said the actress who played her was very intense but she wasn’t afraid of her.

And she hopes the film’s exciting: “The screen magic’s very different to the book magic but I think it’s magical and I hope everyone’s going to enjoy it.”

Georgie Henley who plays Lucy was my favourite out of all of them because she’s so young but so confident, she’ll talk to anybody! And she’s only 10!

Frankly, last Christmas felt a bit empty – and that’s not just because we gave you our heart (but the very next day, you gave it away), but because we were bereft of a suitable mass-appeal fantasy epic to replace The Lord of the Rings. This year, though, we’ve got the prospect of Potter and PJ’s own King Kong, but if anything, this adaptation of the best-known of C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia is a more natural fit. It’s got the literary heritage, a mythical world full of bizarre creatures and a whole bundle of sequels just ripe for adaptation. “There’s obviously some similarities in scale,” says director Andrew Adamson (like Peter Jackson, a New Zealander), “but in other ways this is a very different film because it deals with four individuals and isn’t based on such an expansive story, let’s say.”

The material isn’t the equal of Rings in terms of depth and symbolism either, Adamson acknowledges. “I read [the books] when I was eight years old and it expanded my imagination [to] no end. Then I went back to it as an adult and was surprised by how little is actually in the book, how one-dimensional the characters are. I really wanted the film to expand to fill my imagination of what the story was, which will hopefully fill other people’s imaginations too.”

Hence a one-page battle in the book has been expanded on a truly epic scale, with hideous minotaurs and goblins fighting against centaurs, beavers and our four young heroes, while the conflict between Tilda Swinton’s vicious White Witch and the noble, Christ-like lion, Aslan (voiced by Liam Neeson), will also be deepened. Although buzz is positive, Shrek veteran Adamson’s first foray into live-action has given him his share of headaches.

“It’s a little different with live-action,” he concedes. “But when you’ve got the set around you it’s much easier to get the actors into the headspace. I don’t have to sit around and go, ‘Okay, now you’re standing on a beaver dam.’ I put them there.” He laughs. “Although, after this I’d be happy to go and make a film with five actors sitting round a microphone!”
