Narnia 3 could shoot in New Zealand

Friday, June 5th, 2009

While most of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is likely to be shot in Queensland on the Gold Coast in Australia, it’s possible that some of it could be shot in New Zealand.  Producer Mark Johnson told The Dominion Post last year that neither he nor Andrew Adamson had ruled out shooting some scenes in New Zealand.  Adamson is acting as a producer on the third film, as Michael Apted has stepped into the role of director.

Film New Zealand could not say whether The Voyage of the Dawn Treader had made any decision about shooting there, however, stating that Queensland’s studio facilities serve as a reminder that they need similar facilities to attrack film-makers to New Zealand.

In New Zealand, Prince Caspian DVD Rental also contains Book

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

Prince Caspian Book and DVD“Is the book better than the movie?”  That is the question that people across New Zealand are faced with when renting Prince Caspian on DVD.  Opening the rental case, on the left is the DVD with the feature film, and on the right is that question.  The question is printed on the first page, which is followed by the first two chapters of the book.  Kind of a bonus for renting the DVD.

Lack of studio space may cost NZ third Narnia film

Friday, June 27th, 2008

The third Chronicles of Narnia movie is tipped to be made outside New Zealand because of a lack of studio space there.

Tim Coddington, the New Zealand production manager of Prince Caspian and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, said the third movie in the fantasy series would probably go to a country with more studio infrastructure.

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is likely to be filmed mostly in the studio. Because the story takes place on a boat and a series of fantasy islands, it will require large indoor sets.

Only about a third of Prince Caspian was filmed in New Zealand. However, landscapes from the South Island and Coromandel Peninsula appear alongside scenes from Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovenia. Studio scenes were filmed in Prague.

Almost all of the The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was filmed here.

Screenmark consultant Tim Thorpe said a lack of studio space was an ongoing issue in New Zealand. The Government had done its bit by investing in studios in Auckland and Wellington, but studios were not generally good money-spinners.

Mr Thorpe said Kiwi Andrew Adamson, who directed the first two movies but will not direct the third, was always keen to film in New Zealand but money managers would decide.

Baja in Mexico, where the third film is tipped to be made, has three or four studios the size of that used in Henderson.

The Ministry of Economic Development says The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe makers spent $133.8 million in New Zealand. Just under $17 million of that was repaid by the Government under its large budget screen production incentive scheme.

Interim figures from the ministry show Prince Caspian makers spent $52.3 million here, $6.7 million of which was paid back in a government grant.

Fandango’s Vacation on Location Highlights Narnia

Cathedral Cove, New ZealandFandango’s Vacation on Location Summer Movie Guide ‘08 has an article on the one place all Narnia fans plan on visiting…. NARNIA. Of all the summer movie lists, this is by far one of the best. It contains more then just a brief summary, but it includes some stunning pictures from the new film, and some behind the scenes information as well.

Here is a brief excerpt:

At New Zealand’s Cathedral Cove, Peter, Lucy, Susan and Edmund break into a run, tossing off their coats and shoes to get into the warm waters. Re-shoots were needed for continuity, so the children had to get out of the water, dry off, put on the same wardrobe, and get wet all over again.

The crew also ran into a few problems with enthusiastic locals. A publicist announced on a local radio station that they were filming there, and asked everyone not to interfere. Naturally, Narnia fans did just the opposite.  In one scene, Lucy looks out on the spectacular view of the island and a local’s boat was in the shot, which had to be edited out.

NarniaFans, let’s hope you’ve made your travel plans! This is going to be one great summer!

Redland Shire set for Dawn Treader Film Shoot

Tuesday, December 4th, 2007

Moreton Bay may be transformed into the mythical land of Narnia next year after film crews scouted the Redlands for a new movie location.

Producers for the third film in C.S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia series, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, have visited Cleveland and Wellington Point in southeast Queensland.

A report to Redland Shire Council said production company Disney Pictures preferred the Cleveland site over other Queensland and New Zealand locations but warned there would be disruptions for the local community.

What parts of Queensland do you think would be perfect for Narnia

A ramp 60m by 50m would jut out into the bay from Cleveland Point with an attached 40m ship, expected to be built on the Gold Coast.

“Given the magnitude of the production, a show of support from Redland Shire Council is critical in encouraging the production to keep Queensland ‘top of mind’,” the report urged the council.
