Dawn Treader Cast and Crew Celebrates Halloween

Oscar award-winning make-up artist Howard Berger threw a Halloween party for fellow cast and crew of the Chronicles of Narnia film on Saturday.

Berger, from the US, tells CC he was feeling homesick and wanted to bring the American holiday to the Gold Coast with a party at Southport Bowls Club.

He says Halloween is one of his favourite holidays and he’s even more enthusiastic than his teenage kids.

“I phoned to ask them about Halloween and they were like ‘Dad, it’s not until tomorrow.’ I’m more excited about it than they are,” says Berger, who has worked on blockbusters Inglourious Basterds, The Bucket List and Transformers.

It’s no surprise he is a fan of Halloween as he’s been a make-up artist for the world’s biggest horror films.

As filming for Chronicles of Narnia wraps up on the Gold Coast in three weeks lead actor Ben Barnes says he is sad about leaving.

Barnes, at a Halloween party for fellow cast and crew of the Chronicles of Narnia film at the Southport Bowls Club on Saturday, says he has enjoyed his time on the Gold Coast and is not looking forward to returning home to the UK.

“The Gold Coast is beautiful,” he says.

Skandar Keynes, who celebrated Halloween with cast and crew on Saturday at the Southport Bowls Club, tells CC the Gold Coast gives him the heebie jeebies.

That, and ‘evil pumpkins.’

But Keynes failed to give CC an explanation as to why he finds our town petrifying.

“I don’t know,” he says jokingly.

Oscar® winner Howard Berger and special make-up effects artist Gino Acevedo have been added as guest speakers for the International Make-Up Artist Trade Show (IMATS), held Sept. 12-13 at the Sydney Convention Centre in Sydney, Australia.

Berger, who won an Oscar® for his work on The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, will take the stage along with the make-up team from Narnia. A Los Angeles native, Berger was hired by Stan Winston to work on Predator and Aliens. Later, Berger was hired by Rick Baker to work on Harry and the Hendersons. In 1988, after working for various studios, Berger and Gregory Nicotero formed their own studio, KNB EFX Group, Inc. in Los Angeles.

As the prosthetics supervisor for Weta Workshop, Acevedo oversaw all three Lord of the Rings films. In addition, he oversaw the paint designs of all the films’ creatures. He has worked on Alien 3, The Nutty Professor, Godzilla, Men in Black, Independence Day and Peter Jackson’s King Kong, among other productions.

Along with the guest speaker presentations, IMATS Sydney will feature more than 50 international cosmetics vendors and educational seminars throughout the weekend. A gothic theme has been chosen for the IMATS student competition’s beauty/fantasy component; the prosthetic/character competition has an X-Men mutants theme.

IMATS Sydney is sponsored by Make-Up Artist magazine, which covers professional make-up artistry in film, fashion, TV and theater. It was created in 1996 by Emmy® Award-winning make-up artist Michael Key and is internationally circulated. In addition to IMATS Sydney, Make-Up Artist magazine hosts four other annual trade shows: IMATS London, held in January; IMATS Los Angeles, held in June; IMATS Toronto, held in November; and IMATS Vancouver, B.C. held in April.

KNB EFX launches Website

KNB EFX has opened their official website detailing the incredible body of work that the company has achieved over the years. I must say, though, that it is a site that is definitely for adults only, as the company does do work with scenes that depict blood related events. It’s not for the faint of heart, that’s for sure. Parental guidance suggested.

One thing of definite note to Narnia fans, and a very good thing indeed, is that they are ramping up to start work on The Voyage of the Dawn Treader this summer! Their work on The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe earned them an Academy Award, which was well deserved. Though they were passed on for the excellent work on Prince Caspian, one would assume that’s because it looked so natural, that people forgot that it was the work of an effects house. That’s how good KNB EFX is.

The website features some Narnia concept art that they created that hasn’t been seen anywhere else.

More Creatures In Dawn Treader

Howard Berger, who has handled special effects and makeup for the Chronicle of Narnia movies, said that actors will have a chance to interact with more fantasy creatures in the expected second sequel, Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

And that will mean more models and animatronic characters on set to stand in for complicated computer-generated visual effects that will be added in post-production, he said while giving reporters a tour of his shop this week. That will include a mix of animatronic animals and realistic costumes.

The interaction between the actors and the fantasy characters is a lot more involved than in the previous two movies, Berger said.

“In Dawn Treader there will be a lot of dialogue, and you can’t have the actors act against nothing,” Berger said.

‘Prince Caspian’ less ‘Fairy Tale,’ More Swashbuckling Says Publicist Ernie Malik

One of the first big summer family friendly adventures will be “Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.”

For a “peek” of “Caspian.” courtesy of publicist Ernie Malik (“We Are Marshall”), the chronicles this time have less of a “fairy tale aura ” and more “swashbuckling” action than 2005’s “The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.”

“The same four children return, all ably supported by a big screen newcomer named Ben Barnes. While swashbucklers may appeal to a male audience, girls will swoon over this matinee-idol handsome young Brit,” Malik said.

“Evil personified jumps off the screen in the guise of the story’s villain, Miraz, wonderfully embodied by Italian movie star Sergio Castellitto. He was a delight to watch on the set.”

The sequel returns Aslan the Lion, but anticipate new CGI characters, brand new special F/X make up from Oscar winners Howard Berger and Tami Lane (who took home the coveted gold statue for the first film), and an amazing array of costumes as well.

Publicist Malik has written the “official Making of…” book which contains lots of scenes from “Prince Caspian” and remembering Empire Books from his stay in Huntington, he projects “it may be available in that wonderful bookstore you folks have in the new downtown mall.”

Mark Johnson wasn’t what I expected. And neither was Narnia.

When I was first asked by Disney if I wanted to visit the Prague locations for PRINCE CASPIAN, the second film in their Narnia franchise, I wasn’t sure. This was August of last year. I was in the middle of a number of things. But what made my mind up was a conversation I’d had with Howard Berger on the night we wrapped PRO-LIFE. He was talking about what he wanted to do in the second NARNIA, and what he’d discussed with Andrew Adamson. And listening to him talk about it, it was obvious that Howard wanted to do something different on the second movie. That he was excited about it. I liked his work on the first one. It’s good stuff, and I don’t think anyone was surprised when they won best Make-Up at the Academy Awards. The mix of the practical and the digital is very canny, and just the chance to watch them shoot some of that… remembering how cool it sounded when Howard described it… I told Disney I’d do it.
