NYC Prince Caspian Premiere Red Carpet Footage from OneNews NZ

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

OneNews NZ were there at the red carpet, standing next to us as we snagged interviews with the cast and creative team.

You can watch their video from the red carpet here.

Look closely around the 27 second mark. I’m in the video shaking Andrew Adamson’s hand as he comes over to talk. Pretty cool video with some particularly hilarious editing. I still can’t believe they cut it so that Georgie Henley said what she did. Sounds worse than it was, folks!

AICN talks Prince Caspian Footage

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

AintItCoolNews was invited to London to view 45 minutes of Prince Caspian footage. They’ve written a particularly long review of the footage. But if you want to read it, be aware that they have some profanity. There are also MANY SPOILERS, so if you don’t want to be spoiled, or to put up with the profanity, then stay away. That being said, here are some portions of the review:

We start off with a bright star in the sky (I’m assuming that’ll be the transition between the Disney logo and the movie) and go over some really nice Weta model work of a dark castle and into a room, drawn in the screaming of a woman. She gives birth and a servant runs to tell the king of Telmarines that he just had a son.

The King is bearded like Leonidis in 300. He smiles and tells his servant to follow through on some order we don’t know about yet. Cut to young Caspian sleeping in his bed. He’s woken by his teacher, a chubby, spectacled wizard looking dude with flowing robes and a long white beard. There’s not much time and the teacher leads Caspian through a secret passage (via the wardrobe, of course) as the Telmarine guards enter the room and shoot an [boatload] of crossbow arrows into the draped bed.

Adamson and I talked about Reepicheep and how much I’m looking forward to seeing what Eddie Izzard brings to the fan-favorite violent sword-swinging mouse. Adamson said that he didn’t really find the character of Reepicheep until Izzard came in to record his dialogue. He had an idea, he said, but he came to find that he had subconsciously lifted a lot of his character for Puss N’ Boots when doing SHREK 2.

So, he couldn’t lock down a character that was different from Puss until he heard Izzard give his voice. Then things began clicking.

Foundation of Children’s Books: Prince Caspian Footage Update

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

‘Molly’ writes: I went to the Randy Testa (Walden Media) talk tonight at Boston College entitled “Building Bridges between Books and Movies.”

It was an interesting perspective on this rather controversial practice of adapting books into movies–we all know most viewers will say, “The book was much better,” but Walden Media doesn’t see movies as handicapping the quality of the book. The crowd was mainly teachers and librarians, so much of it was focused on how children are affected by the way things are taught.

Essentially, his points were that movies reinvigorate interest in books (they always sell more in the months before and after a release), that teachers put far too much stock in reading levels and rushing kids through books so that they’ve read enough for college (instead of encouraging them to ignore reading levels and choose what they enjoy/want to reread), and fantasy is necessary for kids to grasp hold on reality. This last point was especially interesting, because he tied in some C.S. Lewis wisdom: fantasy must be grounded in reality.

All in all, a good talk, but sadly, no new Caspian footage. Testa showed some scenes from LWW and the newer behind the scenes clip as narrated by Ben Barnes. Someone in the audience asked if it was intentional that we’ve barely seen any media of the Pevensies, Miraz, etc., and Testa responded, “Completely!”

Also cute: the presentation was held in the Irish Room of Gasson Hall at Boston College, about which Testa remarked, “There’s no more perfect place to talk about C.S. Lewis. He would love it here.”

Prince Caspian Footage featuring Reepicheep at BNAT9

Thursday, December 13th, 2007

Aint It Cool News’ Massawyrm saw some new footage from Prince Caspian with the crowd at their annual movie marathon: BNAT 9. Here’s what he had to say, edited for a little bit of language:

Now I’m on the record as having dug the first one – and I still do. Sure it isn’t LotR or on par with the best of the Harry Potters, but it is better than the weakest of the Potter’s. Liked it better than The Golden Compass as well. But this one looks like a light speed jump in what they’re trying to accomplish.

The footage they showed us was decidedly darker and really seemed to move on from the dropping jaw golly gee whillicker effect that first fantasy films tend to fall prey to. The footage they showed us was of a ruined Narnia – a Narnia some 1300 years later than when last we saw it. Where palaces once stood, now outcroppings of polished stone remain. Everyone we’ve come to love in Narnia is dead. Evil has crept in once again to take the place of goodness. And our four young heroes return as nothing but legends of a bygone age – needed once again to help free the land of tyranny. Sounds pretty good to me.

The centaurs are back. The Minotaurs are back. And this time they both appear to be working alongside our heroes. But most importantly, there were a few sequences of this crudely drawn sword-wielding rat. This was some placeholder animation to show us what this oversized rodent was doing during key sequences, and I for one will say that what he was doing was pretty sweet. If the animation comes out right, he could be one of those truly wonderful characters that folks can fall in love with.

Much like the 10 minute sequence Disney showed us at Fantastic Fest, this footage took me from curious to pretty jazzed. Can’t wait to finally sit down and watch the final product. Disney’s live action film department has been on a serious roll the last few years and hasn’t gotten the props they deserve. Everyone talks about the animation issues and glows about Pixar. They forget that almost everything Live Action that Disney’s been party to has been pretty stellar. Even their lesser films have been fun, family fare. This looks to be up in the peak of their abilities, however. Fans of the series are going to lose their minds when they see the set design and creature work for this. Top notch stuff.
