The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian and all the stories from the Chronicles of Narina are some of the most beloved children’s stories and the movies have recently become major motion pictures and blockbuster hits. The movies’ producer and Lewis’ step-son Douglas Gresham visited FOX 35 to talk about how Lewis has influenced his life, both through his writings and as an adopted member of Lewis family. He also mentions that he’s just come from the set of the Lone Islands from The Voyage of the Dawn Treader in Australia, and that he hopes to make all seven books into films.

The producer of the widely popular “Narnia” films is joining forces with the author of “The Shack” – a modern day classic and New York Times bestseller with more than seven million copies in print – to celebrate the life and legacy of legendary Christian apologist and beloved author C.S. Lewis.

“The Chronicles of C.S. Lewis Conference,” which will be held Aug. 14-15 at Northland, A Church Distributed, Longwood, Fla., will give unique insights into the mind of C.S. Lewis that won’t be found anywhere else. They would like questions for Douglas Gresham, so if you have any you would like asked, please post them in the comments, or contact us, prior to August 14th.

The conference will feature William Paul Young, a longtime C.S. Lewis devotee and author of the runaway bestseller “The Shack.” Just as C.S. Lewis’ books have helped people to explore tough questions that often keep them from faith in God, Young’s book has helped readers worldwide to reconcile their view of God with human suffering.

“I am thrilled to be speaking at this conference,” Young says. “The works and amazing life of C.S. Lewis have deeply shaped my life and my thinking.”

The host of the conference, Douglas Gresham, stepson of C.S. Lewis, is an accomplished author and co-producer and consultant for the Narnia films, including “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” and “Prince Caspian: The Return to Narnia.” He is presently working on the next installment in the film series, “Voyage of the Dawn Treader,” due in 2010.

Gresham will talk about how Lewis has influenced his life, both through his writings and as an adopted member of Lewis’ family.

Born in New York City, the son of writers William Lindsay Gresham and Joy Davidman, Gresham moved to England with his mother and his brother in 1952 after his parents divorced. Joy had become friends with C.S. Lewis through correspondence, and the friendship blossomed, eventually leading to marriage in 1956.

After Gresham’s mother lost her battle with cancer in 1960, Lewis – who had adopted Douglas and his brother in 1956 – continued to raise them. When Lewis died, his estate, including the rights to the popular “Chronicles of Narnia” series, went to his stepsons.

Mike Fernandez, director of the conference, says attendees will leave with a new and deeper appreciation for Lewis’ works.

“You can read about C.S. Lewis, but it’s another thing to know him personally,” he explains. “You’ll get to hear from someone who was actually close to the man. Douglas Gresham has insights that nobody else would.”

The two-day conference will feature music, drama and personal stories that reflect the work of C.S. Lewis, including a concert by gospel recording artist Sara Groves and a one-man adaptation by Tony Lawton of Lewis’ groundbreaking novel “The Great Divorce.”

For more information or interviews regarding the conference, contact Mike Fernandez at 407-937-1753 or mike.fernandez@northlandchurch.net. To register, click on the “Events” tab at http://www.northlandchurch.net. Advanced registration is $38, or $45 the day of the conference. Student and group rates are also available.

This week has been flying by. I just remembered that it was Thursday, and that I hadn’t written this week’s mailbag. So I’m spending lunch time writing this week’s installment. I spent Tuesday riding roller coasters at Cedar Point, and around that day there were some really huge things happening in the world of Narnia. The third film started shooting, and we’ve gotten some great photos of the Dawn Treader nearing completion. I’ve got a couple of e-mails to answer this week, but before I do, I just wanted to give a status update on the secret project. I’m currently working on speed issues on it, but it’s moving forward. I have guests up from Florida so it’s going to take me a little longer than I had initially anticipated, but I hope that it’s worth the wait.

And a quick update on Chesterton’s The Everlasting Man that just came in from a woman named Barbara: “C.S. Lewis’s appreciation for Chesterton’s The Everlasting Man in correspondence is well known. Tolkien borrowed the idea for Ents from Chesterton’s The Trees of Pride! I hope these facts were brought to your attention.” Thanks Barbara!

Q: Currently, the Chronicles of Narnia are being filmed in the order that corresponds to their publication order. However, Douglas Gresham has expressed interest in filming “The Magician’s Nephew” before “The Horse and His Boy“, instead of vice-versa. What is your opinion on this?

-Skulblaka_Shur’tugal

Paul: This is a great question! I am of the opinion that, when you first read the Chronicles, you always read them in the original publication order. As far as the filming goes, however, wherever they end up shooting The Horse and His Boy, it is the one story that doesn’t really seem to matter when they shoot it. It takes place during the reign of the Pevensie children in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. They could easily shoot it prior to The Magician’s Nephew, but shooting it after could afford them some story things that carry over, giving it more weight in the Narnia film series. This series is made up of books that all take place in the same world, but they are very different from one another in substance. The filmmakers are likely to, as we have seen, invent things that provide more continuity for the sake of the audience. If they did, in fact, shoot them in that order, it would give them an opportunity to introduce something in The Magician’s Nephew that has great weight in The Last Battle and, perhaps, have the Pevensie’s part in the story during The Horse and His Boy revolve around that particular thing, in some way. It would help to make that more of a trilogy, in some ways, and when the films would eventually be viewed in chronological order by super fans like us, we might notice some through lines to the overarching story of Narnia.

But who knows, this is all conjecture that I’m thinking about only seconds before I’m typing it. A stream of consciousness about Narnia filming, I suppose. It’s really quite intriguing to think about the possibilities.

Q: Hi! Somewhere I heard that The Call was nominated for an award. When will we find out if it won it – or do we already know??? Thanks.

-Dyanthius

Paul: I could not find information about this. Does anybody know if The Call by Regina Spektor was nominated for an award? I deserved to be. It was one of the best songs on the soundtrack, if not the best. If you know more information about this, please comment below!

Q: Hey, I was just wondering if you could give me a quick rundown or if you knew any links for a brief overview of what the Invisible Army is about? I’m doing extras work on it and I’d love to know what to expect in August.

-Dee

Paul: Wow, Dee! That’s fantastic that you’re doing some extras work on the film! It’s one of my dreams that you’re fulfilling. Best of luck to you on the film, and I hope that it goes well for you. If you would like to get a great look at what Invisible Army is all about, pick up the book The Voyage of the Dawn Treader or a copy of the audio book. I believe that the audio version is about 3 hours in length. The book itself is not that long and can be read fairly quickly. I will tell you, though: it’s an epic adventure on the high seas, with many locations and troubles along the way. I don’t want to say too much about it, though you can likely find plot synopses all over the web, and you can find chapter summaries here on NarniaFans.com if you look in the book section of the site.

And that’s it for this week’s mailbag! Be sure to send in your questions by using the contact form listed on the menu.

The spectacular, Oscar®-winning 2005 release, “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” and its 2008 follow-up, “Prince Caspian,” whose combined global box office gross tops $1.2 billion.

This time around – Edmund and Lucy Pevensie, along with their pesky cousin Eustace Scrubb – find themselves swallowed into a painting and on to a fantastic Narnian ship headed for the very edges of the world.

Cousin Eustace will be played by UK native Will Poulter (”Son of Rambow”).

The supporting cast includes several veterans of the Aussie film world, including Gary Sweet (”Stingers”), Bruce Spence (”Road Warrior”), Arthur Angel (”Ghost Rider”) and Kiwi native Shane Rangi, back for his third go-round in Lewis’ fantastical world (donning the guise of a Minotaur, as he did in the two previous films). And, lending his vocal talents again to the project is Academy Award® nominee Liam Neeson (”Kinsey,” “Schindler’s List”) as the all-powerful ruler of Narnia, Aslan the Lion.

While relinquishing the director’s chair this time out, filmmaker Andrew Adamson (the Oscar®-winning “Shrek,” “Shrek 2″) will return as one of the film’s three producers, reteaming with his colleagues from the first two “Narnia” films — Academy Award®-winner Mark Johnson (”Rain Man,” “Bugsy,” “The Notebook”) and Philip Steuer (”The Rookie,” “The Alamo”).

Also back for another Narnian adventure are Executive Producers Perry Moore and Lewis’ stepson, Douglas Gresham. The screenplay was written by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely (Lion, Witch & The Wardrobe and Prince Caspian) and Richard LaGravenese (The Fisher King) and Michael Petroni (The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys).

Inspired by Lewis’ imaginative creations, the story’s human cast will once again be complemented by a gallery of original creatures portrayed onscreen in the combined efforts of live-action and CGI animation under the supervision of visual effects supervisor Angus Bickerton (”The Da Vinci Code,” “Angels and Demons”). Oscar® winners Howard Berger and Tami Lane, back for their third “Narnia” project, will reprise their efforts on the film’s prosthetic makeup effects for many of the unique characters in the story.

Apted’s technical crew also includes two industry veterans with whom he has shared an ongoing collaboration — Oscar®-nominated director of photography Dante Spinotti (”L.A. Confidential,” “The Insider”) and film editor Rick Shaine (”The Incredible Hulk,” HBO’s “Rome”). The production has also secured the talents of veteran production designer Barry Robison (”Wolverine”) and award-winning costume designer Isis Mussenden (”Shrek,” “Shrek 2″), who created the wardrobe for the previous two Narnia movies.

“The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” is the third (appearing in 1952) of Lewis’ seven-book “Chronicles of Narnia” series. Published between 1950-56 and long regarded as one of literature’s most enduring and imaginative classics, Lewis’ books have sold over 100,000,000 copies in over 50 different languages, making it the second biggest book series the world over. In addition to the third novel, the Oxford scholar wrote six additional books, including “Prince Caspian” (1951), “The Silver Chair” (1953), “The Horse and His Boy” (1954), “The Magician’s Nephew” (1955), “The Last Battle” (1956) and the story that launched the series in 1950, “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.”

Production on “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” will take place entirely in Queensland, Australia, primarily at the Warner Roadshow Studio facility in Gold Coast, which houses the Southern Hemisphere’s largest water tank facility, crucial to the production’s needs. Filming will conclude in November 2009, with a year-long post-production schedule leading to the film’s global release in December 2010.

The last two weeks have been some of the busiest weeks I’ve had since re-launching the mailbag. Last week, in fact, was so busy that I didn’t get a chance to do the mailbag. I usually do it on Wednesdays, but there was something important that came up last week. You see, there was a movie that came out that has made nearly a half of a billion dollars worldwide, so far. Being a child of the 80s, I had to see it. Twice. On opening day. Yes, I am a geek, and no, I don’t recommend this movie for children to see. But I won’t be reviewing it entirely unless I am asked to write further on it, the film is Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, and I loved it. Not every minute, but I thought it was great overall.

Now for an update that many of you asked me to give. For those that didn’t know, my sister was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, and was to have surgery this week. The surgery lasted twice as long as the doctors had anticipated, and they wound up taking the entire thyroid out. Apparently she isn’t entirely in the clear, as of yet; but she’ll be having radioactive iodine treatments soon that should take care of the rest. Prayers are welcome. She also has a convent of 250 nuns praying for her. She plans on entering the convent this fall.

We’ve got some great letters this week, so let’s get to it.

Q: In the LWW Extended Edition, on disk 4 (Visualizing LWW, The Complete Production Experience) Douglas Gresham states that when Jack and Warnie were living at the Kilns during WWII, several children were sent to live with them, and that one of them was the basis for the character of Lucy Pevensie, and that she became a well-known actress in England, and was still alive today.

Anybody know who he’s talking about?

-Islandgeek

Paul: I went straight to the source on this one, and got word directly from Mr. Gresham himself!

Douglas Gresham: The girl who was the model for Lucy was June Flewett, later to be known as Lady June Freud when her husband Clement Freud (Grandson of Sigmund Freud) was knighted. He died just a couple of weeks ago. June was an evacuee at The Kilns, and later volunteered to stay on there to help out.

Q: I was wondering if Harry Gregson-Williams was doing the soundtrack for The Voyage of the Dawn Treader film? I feel like I heard somewhere that he isn’t, since it has been taken over by Fox. If then he isn’t doing the soundtrack does that mean that all new music (with no recurring themes) would have to be created? I’m not sure if there are copyright issues there..?

Thanks!

~Marie

P.S. I thought of this question because I know that when a new composer did the soundtrack for the new Pirates of the Caribbean the old music was copyrighted and he couldn’t even use the old themes anywhere on the soundtrack.

Paul: Great question Marie, though this one is going to take some time for me to answer. Bear with me as I expound upon my knowledge of the film soundtracks to which you are referring.

Long ago, David Arnold was announced to be the composer for The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Harry Gregson-Williams won’t be back for this film, but that doesn’t mean that his themes won’t be reprised in some way. I don’t believe there are copyright issues, as the Narnia franchise isn’t Disney’s, it’s Walden Media’s; and Walden Media is still on the project.

When it came to the soundtrack for Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, which was attributed to Klaus Badelt, it turns out that is a slightly misleading. There was actually a team of composers behind the soundtrack of the first Pirates film, and all of them did so as part of Hans Zimmer’s Media Ventures. Ramin Djawadi, James Dooley, Nick Glennie-Smith, Steve Jablonsky, Blake Neely, James McKee Smith, and Geoff Zanelli each composed snippets of music for the score. Klaus Badelt served as the music supervisor on the project, with Hans Zimmer acting as over-producer. Zimmer, himself, couldn’t take credit for having composed the score, because of an agreement with with another studio at the time.

Side note before I move on to the next film in that series: Alan Silvestri was the original composer on Curse of the Black Pearl, but his score didn’t match what producer Jerry Bruckheimer had in mind for the music. The movie’s score was written from the ground up by Media Ventures at a break-neck speed, with only two or three weeks to complete. They started with stock-music that Media Ventures already had, and built on that to complete the score.

Now, for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, Hans Zimmer had far more time to actually work on the score. He wrote themes for characters like Jack Sparrow and Davy Jones, as well as the Kraken. In much the same way that Prince Caspian had his own theme that didn’t appear in the first film, Davy Jones had his. There were rehashes of musical ques from the first film in both of the sequels, but Zimmer wanted to create defined themes.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End did the same thing, expanding themes established in the first two films, while also establishing some new ones, such as the Will Turner / Elizabeth Swann love theme.

As you can see, it was never a case of copyright infringement. It could never be, as the same company and composer worked on all three films. What you witnessed was a progression. Think of it like a favorite band. A band such as Skillet or Relient K. Every album they release sounds like them, but it’s new music. If all they did was change the lyrics, but not much else, they’d be Nickelback. And that gets very boring, the more it is done.

There are many great examples of things like this throughout the film world. The Lord of the Rings is an obvious example, as it’s quite possibly the greatest music written for film in the history of the motion picture. But one film series in particular always starts the same, but different: Star Wars. John Williams will even tell you, the theme music that plays over the opening crawl is different for each film. He uses different instruments to emphasize different emotions for each film. It’s very subtle, yes, but it is intentional.

A good example to look at, though, is the Harry Potter series. John Williams was acting composer in the series for the first three films. The theme has been used, though, in all films since. The same will likely be true of Narnia, though each book is entirely different from the last, so it’ll probably sound pretty different each time.

And that’s all that I have time for, this week. I have a lot of projects to finish tomorrow, so I need some sleep! Contact us with your questions!

Lewis Society announces that the spring tour to England is now closed. The Society is very thankful as the response from Narnia fans worldwide has been very positive and encouraging and the tour is moving forward anticipating the trip of a lifetime.

In the Spirit of that anticipation, Douglas Gresham (who will be guiding the Oxford leg of the tour) has been kind enough to share an essay (originally published in Silver Leaves) that provides a refreshing glimpse of the many Inklings he attended with his stepfather, C. S. Lewis. There are many books about the Oxford Inklings (J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, Charles Williams & others) but Douglas’ essay is from a rather unique perspective – sitting around the table with them! Shards of Diamonds can be found at www.oxfordspires.wordpress.com.

Lewis 2009 Tour. The update comes by way of the C.S. Lewis Society.

We have added a new and exciting dimension to our C.S. Lewis Society’s tour, “The Path of C.S. Lewis and British Christianity.” Douglas Gresham, the step-son of C.S. Lewis, will be our special guest for the Oxford portion of our nine-day educational tour of England, May 31st through June 8th, 2009. He will personally accompany us as we visit the colleges at Oxford, tour the Kilns (Lewis’s and Douglas’s home in Oxford,) and enjoy an evening meal at the Trout Inn, where J. R. R. Tolkien ate often with “Jack.” He will travel with us as we visit the Eagle and Child Pub, where Lewis gathered with his Christian soul mates, the “Inklings.” It is an incredible honor for our society to have Mr. Gresham with us, who is co-producer of the two recent Narnia Disney films. It is gracious of him to share with us his personal life-memories of his years with C.S. Lewis.

With its main focus on both Oxford and Cambridge, the trip has been designed to touch minds and hearts–to inform and transform. By tracing the remarkable spread of the gospel in Great Britain and beyond-and C.S. Lewis’s unique role in that advance-we seek to inspire a vision of what God can do yet again, facing today’s challenges.

In addition to our time in Oxford, the tour will include visits to Salisbury Cathedral, Stonehenge, the colleges and private tours of Cambridge, Ely Cathedral’s Evensong Service, and worship on Sunday at Cambridge’s historic Holy Trinity Church, where the gospel has been boldly preached for many centuries!

Daily talks will be given by not only our newly added guest speaker, Douglas Gresham, but also by Society director, Dr. Tom Woodward, on the life and theology of C.S. Lewis and the history of Christianity in England.

We have been invited for a private visit to Tyndale House in Cambridge to hear an evening lecture by the brilliant young British theologian, Dr. Peter Williams. British ministry leaders Ranald Macauley and Peter Loose will also give exciting talks, and joining us from Portland, Oregon is C. S. Lewis scholar, Darren Jacobs. (It is Darren who is a personal friend of Douglas Gresham and arranged for Mr. Gresham to join us while we are in Oxford!)

A comfortable, air-conditioned tour bus will carry us from start to finish, and all lodging, ground transportation, daily breakfasts, and entrance fees to all tour events are covered. There is an optional group rate for air travel from the US to London from your departure city or NYC, leaving May 30th, arriving in London on May 31st, and returning to the US on June 9th.

With only two weeks left to enroll for this tour, this is our final invitation for you to join us. It is recommended that you are able to walk several miles in some locations while on a walking tour, such as Cambridge. Our bus will carry us to any location that we otherwise desire. Also, a valid passport is required.

If you are interested in joining us for this exciting tour and receiving details concerning the price with an optional airfare package, please contact Normandy Woodward ASAP via email at:
normandywoodward@tampabay.rr.com or call (727) 244-4173. All monies and flight tickets will be handled through Educational Opportunities Tours, which is a Christian tour company.

NarniaFans Staff Member, Jonathon D. Svendsen, is going to be featured in the second issue of Silver Leaves, which is put out by the White Tree Fund, a Tolkien-related publication. The theme for this issue is dedicated to the Inklings. Fans of CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien know that the Inklings was the name of the informal literary group that consisted of CS Lewis, JRR Tolkien, Charles Williams and many others.

Svendsen’s essay is a reflective piece that looks at his first encounters with Narnia, Middle-earth and how their creators shaped his imagination and helped him in his childhood. His essay is featured along side the likes of Colin Duriez and his piece examining the nature of evil in Lord of the Rings, Brian Sibley’s tribute to artist Pauline Baynes, and an essay on the Inklings, written by one of the few people who actually knew them, Douglas Gresham.

A preview of the issue can be read here: Silver Leaves Preview

Further informaton on the journal, and the White Tree Fund can be found at www.whitetreefund.org. The journal costs $20.oo (CDN) plus shipping and handling. The White Tree Fund is a non-profit organization, based in Canada, that supports charities enaged in crisis response, humanitarian programs, literacy and environmental initatives.

Sci-Fi Pulse has finally posted their red carpet interview video for Prince Caspian. In that, Douglas Gresham mentions a bit about what they’re doing with the production order for the Narnia films. From what he says, it looks like the production will continue as the books were published.

This is the smartest way to do it. Narnia purists will tell you that the only way to read the books for the first time is the original publication order. That’s what I tell anyone to do, that has not read them yet to do.

Anyway, on the red carpet in New York, Douglas Gresham says:

We still have five books to do. I’m working right now on pre-production on The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and I’m already starting discussions on The Silver Chair; and we’re just toying with the idea of doing The Horse and His Boy after that. So we are thinking ahead.

This doesn’t confirm it solidly, but it does show a bit more of what they’re planning. That’ll just leave The Magician’s Nephew and The Last Battle to close out the series.

Watch the video on Sci-Fi Pulse. There’s a great part where Georgie Henley meets Liam Neeson. Priceless!
