This week has been flying by. I just remembered that it was Thursday, and that I hadn’t written this week’s mailbag. So I’m spending lunch time writing this week’s installment. I spent Tuesday riding roller coasters at Cedar Point, and around that day there were some really huge things happening in the world of Narnia. The third film started shooting, and we’ve gotten some great photos of the Dawn Treader nearing completion. I’ve got a couple of e-mails to answer this week, but before I do, I just wanted to give a status update on the secret project. I’m currently working on speed issues on it, but it’s moving forward. I have guests up from Florida so it’s going to take me a little longer than I had initially anticipated, but I hope that it’s worth the wait.

And a quick update on Chesterton’s The Everlasting Man that just came in from a woman named Barbara: “C.S. Lewis’s appreciation for Chesterton’s The Everlasting Man in correspondence is well known. Tolkien borrowed the idea for Ents from Chesterton’s The Trees of Pride! I hope these facts were brought to your attention.” Thanks Barbara!

Q: Currently, the Chronicles of Narnia are being filmed in the order that corresponds to their publication order. However, Douglas Gresham has expressed interest in filming “The Magician’s Nephew” before “The Horse and His Boy“, instead of vice-versa. What is your opinion on this?

-Skulblaka_Shur’tugal

Paul: This is a great question! I am of the opinion that, when you first read the Chronicles, you always read them in the original publication order. As far as the filming goes, however, wherever they end up shooting The Horse and His Boy, it is the one story that doesn’t really seem to matter when they shoot it. It takes place during the reign of the Pevensie children in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. They could easily shoot it prior to The Magician’s Nephew, but shooting it after could afford them some story things that carry over, giving it more weight in the Narnia film series. This series is made up of books that all take place in the same world, but they are very different from one another in substance. The filmmakers are likely to, as we have seen, invent things that provide more continuity for the sake of the audience. If they did, in fact, shoot them in that order, it would give them an opportunity to introduce something in The Magician’s Nephew that has great weight in The Last Battle and, perhaps, have the Pevensie’s part in the story during The Horse and His Boy revolve around that particular thing, in some way. It would help to make that more of a trilogy, in some ways, and when the films would eventually be viewed in chronological order by super fans like us, we might notice some through lines to the overarching story of Narnia.

But who knows, this is all conjecture that I’m thinking about only seconds before I’m typing it. A stream of consciousness about Narnia filming, I suppose. It’s really quite intriguing to think about the possibilities.

Q: Hi! Somewhere I heard that The Call was nominated for an award. When will we find out if it won it – or do we already know??? Thanks.

-Dyanthius

Paul: I could not find information about this. Does anybody know if The Call by Regina Spektor was nominated for an award? I deserved to be. It was one of the best songs on the soundtrack, if not the best. If you know more information about this, please comment below!

Q: Hey, I was just wondering if you could give me a quick rundown or if you knew any links for a brief overview of what the Invisible Army is about? I’m doing extras work on it and I’d love to know what to expect in August.

-Dee

Paul: Wow, Dee! That’s fantastic that you’re doing some extras work on the film! It’s one of my dreams that you’re fulfilling. Best of luck to you on the film, and I hope that it goes well for you. If you would like to get a great look at what Invisible Army is all about, pick up the book The Voyage of the Dawn Treader or a copy of the audio book. I believe that the audio version is about 3 hours in length. The book itself is not that long and can be read fairly quickly. I will tell you, though: it’s an epic adventure on the high seas, with many locations and troubles along the way. I don’t want to say too much about it, though you can likely find plot synopses all over the web, and you can find chapter summaries here on NarniaFans.com if you look in the book section of the site.

And that’s it for this week’s mailbag! Be sure to send in your questions by using the contact form listed on the menu.

The awards have been presented since 1985 and are run by the Association for Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists (ASFA).

In the Hollywood Reporter’s Oscar Preview series, they list The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian among the potential contenders for Best Visual Effects in a Motion Picture. This is an area that it has the potential to win, or at least get a nomination. The visual effects are seamless, and in many cases better than in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Other potential leaders in the category include The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which could be a leading contender with a CG face of Brad Pitt aging in reverse. There are also Iron Man and The Dark Knight, which combined visual effects designed for realism with compelling stories.

Oscar Nominations in January.

Adam Sibley e-mailed us from the Talented Young People organization. They are a non-profit organization set up to help young people. They’ve nominated four of the actors from Prince Caspian for their Talented Young Person of the Month Award for July which is celebrating the release of Prince Caspian. Below is the information. Voting closes the last day of July.

Talented Young Person of the Month Award – July Nominees

To celebrate the release of Prince Caspian the latest film in the Chronicles of Narnia series we only have four nominees for the July award and those four nominees are the awesome four young actors who play four of the lead roles.

Georgie Henley – Lucy Pevensie

Georgie Henley is a precocious twelve year old who the fans of the new Narnia Film series have taken to their hearts. In Prince Caspian she has a lot of on screen time and gives a brilliant performance which plays a big part in why the film has been so greatly received. The Chronicles of Narnia is Georgie’s first work in film but I’m sure when the series ends she will have people beating down her door to work with her.

Skandar Keynes – Edmund Pevensie

Skandar Keynes was born in to a very successful family with many different members of his family tree excelling in various fields including writing and radio. It could have all been so different for Skandar as at the same time he auditioned for The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe he was auditioning for a role in Nanny McPhee and if he had been successful in that and not in his Narnia audition then his career may have gone down a different path.

William Moseley – Peter Pevensie

William is the oldest out of all four young people playing the roles of the Pevensie siblings at the age of 21. Again The Chronicles of Narnia is his first film work although he did have a few small parts in some TV programmes. William has wanted to act since the age of ten and even went to audition for the role of Harry Potter when it was originally cast.

Anna Popplewell – Susan Pevensie

Out of all four Anna has the most acting experience with her first major credit coming in the film Mansfield Park in 1999. Since then she has gone on to a star in a variety or projects until she landed the role of Susan for The Chronicles of Narnia. Not only is Anna a talented actress but she is talented in the classroom to as she currently studies at Oxford University. Anna has won awards for her portrayal of Susan and was even nominated for a Teen Choice Award.

The 37th Annual GMA Awards were presented last night, and Narnia took home an award. Not to mention a number of the artists on the Soundtrack took home other awards themselves.

Special Event Album of the Year: Music Inspired by the Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe; Jeremy Camp, Steven Curtis Chapman, David Crowder Band, Delirious?, Bethany Dillon, Jars of Clay, Kutless, Nichole Nordeman, Rebecca St. James, tobyMac, Chris Tomlin; Ed Cash, Steven Curtis Chapman, David Crowder, Andy Dodd, Sam Gibson, Dan Haseltine, Charlie Lowell, Steve Mason, Matt Odmark, Jay Joyce, Shaun Shenkel, Aaron Sprinkle, Toby McKeehan, Adam Watts, Christopher Stevens, Mitch Dane; Sparrow Records

Chris Tomlin took home Song of the Year for “How Great is Our God,” Male Vocalist of the Year, Artist of the Year, and Worship Song of the Year for “How Great is Our God.”

TobyMac took home Rock Recorded Song of the Year for “Slam” from his album “Welcome to Diverse City.”

David Crowder Band won Rock/Contemporary Recorded Song of the Year for “Here is Our King” from their album “A Collision,” and Rock/Contemporary Album of the Year for that album.

Jars of Clay won Recorded Music Packaging of the Year for their album “Redemption Songs.”

These awards are all in addition to the shared award for “Special Event Album of the Year,” which all involved artists received.

In related news, JfH met with Jars of Clay yesterday to discuss their brand new record Good Monsters. The self-produced record will contain thirteen brand new songs with a tentative release date of September 18th from Essential Records. The guys told Jesusfreakhideout.com that the album will be their most aggressive record to date, and features a guest appearance by Leigh Nash. Expect to see the JfH interview with the guys about the album to hit the site very soon…

Jeremy Camp has been actively working on his newest record Beyond Measure which is expecting to release on Halloween this Fall. The October 31st release will feature a little more experimentation from the favorite male vocalist. Camp has also been busy co-producing his wife Adrienne Liesching’s (formerly of The Benjamin Gate) debut solo record Don’t Wait, which is scheduled to release on September 28. Under the moniker Adie, listeners can expect an alt pop record in the same vein of Jeremy’s sound with plenty of Adrienne’s personal touches. Look for the two on tour together this Fall!(from Jesusfreakhideout.com NEWS)
