Stephen Morahan is a film design specialist who, in 2007, had a very important project on his resume. He used CAD (Computer-Aided Drafting) to build the Dawn Treader!
His resume says:
Details of Experience: CAD drawing of Dawn Treader ship hull steelwork for the Art Department including 3D model to check the hull profile.
Thanks to NarniaFans Spy Oswald the Lucky Rabbit for the update!

Mark Johnson, producer on “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe,” “Prince Caspian,” and “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” is featured in a brief entertainment news piece in the Calgary Sun.
Regarding the first two Narnia films, Johnson said, “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe worked phenomenally well and Prince Caspian worked very well. It’s funny it’s seen in a different light (but it still made) just under half a billion dollars.”
Johnson also comments that he looks forward to working on “Dawn Treader,” due in theaters in December 2010. The full article is available at the Calgary Sun’s website. Scroll down to the heading that reads “Third Time Lucky?”

This week’s mailbag is a little late because I was waiting for the upgrade to the software on which NarniaFans.com runs. It finally was released late last night, and by that time, I was too tired to write this. Not to mention that I’m working on a secret project that I think you’re all going to love. But there’ll be more time for that in the future. If you want to submit a question as to what it could be, hint free, be my guest. I’ll answer every question with one that brings you closer to the answer.

A low-quality picture of the “Voyage of the Dawn Treader” logo is posted in an entry on the Jim Hill Media blog.
Check out the entry here. The VDT logo appears about half way down the page. It’s very similar to the original logos for both The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Prince Caspian, which is great considering the change in production studio.

A new Narnia fan site has just launched and they have an interview with John Dickenson, who worked as a concept artist for Prince Caspian. He also spent some time working on The Voyage of the Dawn Treader:
How goes work on the Dawn Treader?
“It’s been over a year since I worked on it up in L.A. They are now shooting it down in Australia. It was my highlight so far in my career to be a part of. The 3 of us(Justin, Vance), got to work with Director Michael Apted, who was amazing to work for. We really liked the way he went about making a movie. And we also got to work with an amazingly talented Production Designer named Jan Roelfs. He had some great takes on the way this film should look and feel. We also met with Wetta’s Richard Taylor for an afternoon. He was a great inspiration. We hope to get the chance to work with him in the future. He left when we did, so I have no idea how the new PD will do on it. But the work we created was some of our best I feel. Once the movies out, I’ll post all my art on my website.”

While most of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is likely to be shot in Queensland on the Gold Coast in Australia, it’s possible that some of it could be shot in New Zealand. Producer Mark Johnson told The Dominion Post last year that neither he nor Andrew Adamson had ruled out shooting some scenes in New Zealand. Adamson is acting as a producer on the third film, as Michael Apted has stepped into the role of director.
Film New Zealand could not say whether The Voyage of the Dawn Treader had made any decision about shooting there, however, stating that Queensland’s studio facilities serve as a reminder that they need similar facilities to attrack film-makers to New Zealand.

Oscar® winner Howard Berger and special make-up effects artist Gino Acevedo have been added as guest speakers for the International Make-Up Artist Trade Show (IMATS), held Sept. 12-13 at the Sydney Convention Centre in Sydney, Australia.
Berger, who won an Oscar® for his work on The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, will take the stage along with the make-up team from Narnia. A Los Angeles native, Berger was hired by Stan Winston to work on Predator and Aliens. Later, Berger was hired by Rick Baker to work on Harry and the Hendersons. In 1988, after working for various studios, Berger and Gregory Nicotero formed their own studio, KNB EFX Group, Inc. in Los Angeles.

Academic fans of Narnia creator C.S. Lewis could come to the defence of Malvern’s gas lamps, which served as the inspiration for a famous scene in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The future of the gas lamps has been raised after parish councils around Malvern were hit with unexpected top-up bills to pay for their maintenance and running.

This week’s mailbag is a little bit late, and I apologize for that. I had some stuff to get done this week, and I’ve started doing a new project. Not to mention that I have been a little sick, so I’ve gotten a lot of extra sleep lately. Not that it has anything to do with this. Anyway, let’s get to it, some interesting letters came in this week.

This would be one amazing find, as The Last Battle is my favorite book in the series. A first edition of the book has been discovered by a pair of charity bookshop volunteers. Christine and Robert Williams were sorting through a delivery of donations to the National Trust’s second-hand bookshop at Mottisfont and came across a copy of the book. Small, hardcovered, complete with a beautifully illustrated dust jacket. The book was published in 1956 and could be worth as much as £1,000.
