Prince Caspian Set Pictures in Slovenia

Friday, June 29th, 2007

A girl in Slovenia has stumbled upon a set to be used in The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. She says that it is nearby her Grandmother’s home. She hopes to see some filming there, but says that it is supposed to be used for only one or two scenes.. perhaps a battle scene.

See the pictures at her blog. It looks like a camp site for an army. Very cool stuff.

Nika explains: Only one part of the movie will be shot there, I think it involves a battle or something. The set is about 5 km from my grandma’s house and I hope I’ll be able to see some of the shooting. If I’ll spend any time there, that is.

She asked us to direct people to her blog to see the pictures, but her blog no longer exists as of 2009, so we’re complying with her request.

Has Casting for Eustace Begun?

Friday, June 29th, 2007

An IMDb user called ‘cppelham,’ whose son has auditioned for a Walden Media production or two, has recently posted that auditions are underway for the role of Eustace Clarence Scrubb for The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. We don’t yet have official word on this, so if anyone knows, please contact us ASAP.

He reports:

The casting for Eustace began last week, with dozens of boys. The process should take ages. Boys are just being filmed now and next week as well so I suspect the next round will start in 2 to 3 weeks. Lots of people on holiday though, so hopefully they will get it done quickly.

C.S. Lewis Society Update, 6/23/07

Friday, June 29th, 2007

David J. Theroux, the Founder and President of the C. S. Lewis Society of California has e-mailed us with the latest updates on many upcoming events that you’re all invited to attend! I hope that some of you have the chance to visit these events and join Lewis Societies, or even have the opportunity to start one in your own area if one does not exist. Again, sorry for the delay again. I was reminded of this e-mail by a user that actually visited the group and had a great time. Here’s the update:

Please note the following in this issue of the C.S. Lewis Society Update (6/23/07):

1. Forthcoming Films Based on Books by C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien
2. Mere Christianity
3. Next meetings of the C.S. Lewis Society’s Bay Area Book Club: “Why does suffering exist?”
4. Other Events

1. Forthcoming Films Based on Books by C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien:

A. The acclaimed film-maker Michael Apted will direct the third film in C.S. Lewis’s “Chronicles of Narnia” series, “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.” Among Apted’s earlier films are “Gorillas in the Mist,” “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” “Lipstick,” and “Amazing Grace.”

New Zealander Andrew Adamson, who has directed the first two films in the series (”The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe” and “Prince Caspian”) will serve as a producer for the third Narnia film. (”Prince Caspian” is scheduled for release on May 16, 2008, and “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” will debut on May 1, 2009.)

B. Oscar-nominee director and screen writer Randall Wallace, whose film credits include “Braveheart,” “Pearl Harbor,” and “The Man in the Iron Mask,” is writing the screenplay for (and may direct) the film version of Lewis’s book, “The Screwtape Letters.” The film is being produced by Ralph Winter, whose many films include the last four Star Trek films, “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer,” “X-Men: The Last Stand,” “Planet of the Apes,” and “The Puppet Masters,” as well as the widely popular ABC-TV series, “Lost.”

C. Plans are also underway for a 2009 prequel film of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings.” The producers are trying to get the original cast re-assembled for this film as well as a film version of Tolkien’s book, “The Hobbit.” Additional film interest has already developed in the new novel by Christopher Tolkien (J.R.R.’s son) that was released in April, “The Children of Hurin,” set hundreds of years before the events of the “Rings” trilogy, during the First Age of Middle Earth.

2. Mere Christianity:

Are materialist modernism and post-modernism on their way out? Consistent with C.S. Lewis’s work in critiquing the pervasive materialism, reductionism, scientism, collectivism, statism, and de-humanization of the “modern” era, more and more top scholars are revealing the unique and enduring truths of Christian theism.

Here is a sampling of interviews in this regard:

“An Interview with Francis Collins, Director of the National Human Genome Research Institute” (Time)

“Spiritual Disciplines in a Postmodern World: An Interview of Dallas Willard” (Newsweek)

“Mere Mission: N.T. Wright Talks about How to Present the Gospel in a Postmodern World”

“Theism as a Properly Basic Belief: An Interview with Alvin Plantinga”

“Divine Action: An Interview with Sir John Polkinghorne”

“Argument from Reason: An Interview with Victor Reppert”

“Faith and Reason: Was Christianity the Engine of Western Progress? An Interview with Rodney Stark”

“A Man of Ethics and Science: An Interview with Ian Barbour”

3. Next meeting of the C.S. Lewis Society’s Bay Area Book Club:

Books for Discussion on the Topic, “Why does suffering exist?”

THE PROBLEM OF PAIN and A GRIEF OBSERVED, by C.S. Lewis:

Meeting moderator/leader: Daniel Classen
Wednesday, June 27th, 7:30 p.m.
Wednesday, July 11th, 7:30 p.m.

THE PROBLEM OF PAIN answers the universal question, “Why would an all-loving, all-knowing God allow people to experience pain and suffering?” C.S. Lewis asserts that pain is a problem because our finite, human minds selfishly believe that pain-free lives would prove that God loves us. In truth, by asking for this, we want God to love us less, not more than He does. “Love, in its own nature, demands the perfecting of the beloved; that the mere ‘kindness’ which tolerates anything except suffering in its object is, in that respect at the opposite pole from Love.” In addressing “Divine Omnipotence,” “Human Wickedness,” “Human Pain,” and “Heaven,” Lewis succeeds in lifting the reader from his frame of reference by artfully capitulating these topics into a conversational tone. Lewis is straightforward in aim as well as honest about his impediments, saying, “I am not arguing that pain is not painful. Pain hurts. I am only trying to show that the old Christian doctrine that being made perfect through suffering is not incredible. To prove it palatable is beyond my design.”

Lewis later experienced crushing doubt after his wife’s tragic death from cancer. A GRIEF OBSERVED contains his epigrammatic reflections on that period: “Your bid-for God or no God, for a good God or the Cosmic Sadist, for eternal life or nonentity-will not be serious if nothing much is staked on it. And you will never discover how serious it was until the stakes are raised horribly high,” Lewis writes. “Nothing will shake a man-or at any rate a man like me-out of his merely verbal thinking and his merely notional beliefs. He has to be knocked silly before he comes to his senses. Only torture will bring out the truth. Only under torture does he discover it himself.” This is the book that inspired the film SHADOWLANDS, but it is more wrenching, more revelatory, and more real than the movie. It is a beautiful and unflinchingly honest record of how even a stalwart believer can lose all sense of meaning in the universe, and how he can regain his bearings and be stronger than ever, just as he discussed in his book, THE PROBLEM OF PAIN.

The meeting will be held at:

11990 Skyline Boulevard, Oakland, CA 94619
510-482-2906 phone
wine, soft drinks and other refreshments served

Adamson talks Prince Caspian at Cinema Expo -UPDATED- Film Shown

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

It’s a simple message from the director about the film. As we all know, Prince Caspian is a pretty battle filled book. It appears the film will follow that trend.

Variety reports. Given a big push was “The Chronicles of Narnia” sequel. Helmer Andrew Adamson delivered a taped message saying that, unlike the original, “Prince Caspian” will feature “battles all the way through.”

The Hollywood Reporter followed that up with word of a film reel from the sequel. Disney’s showreel also showcased footage from the next films in the “Narnia” and “National Treasure” franchises — “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian” and “National Treasure: Book of Secrets” — as well as “Wall E,” a Pixar movie about an old-fashioned robot.

What did that footage consist of? We can only wonder.

Narnia land is now in the Barrandov Studio in Prague

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

Prague Barrandov Studio is busy now to create the perfect requisites (sets) for the American film The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. The film is being shot here from April to August and it costs over 100 million USD.

According to the director of Barrandov Studio, this film has been the biggest project there since Roman Polanski’s film Oliver Twist in 2004. The studios now contains a castle with a large courtyard and a big gate, towers and a drawbridge. The main stars of the film, Georgie Henley, Skandar Keynes, William Moseley and Anna Popplewell will also shoot in caves or in a wood with a waterfall and a small lake, all made in Barrandov studios.

About 110 people has been working on the requisites for more than 6 months. The Czech premiere of the film is planned for May 2008.

Prince Caspian Licensed to Fox

Friday, June 22nd, 2007

Playthings.com continues their great coverage of the New York Licensing Show with news on not just Prince Caspian, but other Walden Media projects as well. Take a look to see what they’ll be a part of!

For younger fans, Fox also has an array of properties and product on the horizon. The company was recently named licensing agent for Walden Media, producers of the The Chronicles of Narnia, Charlotte’s Web and Bridge to Teribithia. Fox will develop licensed merchandise programs for the upcoming Prince Caspian, the second film in the Narnia series, as well as the additional upcoming live-action film products The Dark is Rising, City of Ember and the Tortoise and the Hippo, which is based on the popular Scholastic children’s book series about the friendship between the now famous African animal friends, Owen and Mzee. “Fox has got a very robust portfolio of brands,” Peikoff said. “Walden gives us a complementary layer, and we’re broadening our consumer base … We don’t want to be all kids’ [brands] but we certainly don’t want to be all adults’ [brands.] It allows us to leverage all parts of the demographics.”

Granat: Apted ‘grew up as a fan of Narnia’

Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

For those of you that are a bit concerned that a new director is taking over for Andrew Adamson on the third installment of the series, this should help to sway you over to his side.

“Michael grew up as a fan of ‘Narnia’ . . . and he has a real connection to the franchise,” Walden Media CEO Cary Granat said. “He blew everyone away with his passion and vision.”

Michael Apted is a very capable director with many films to his name, and he’s got the vision to be able to pull off The Voyage of the Dawn Treader with a steady hand. I look forward to his vision of Narnia, and perhaps having the chance to converse with him some day.

Thanks again to Tarva2Alambil for sending this quote along.

New LWW Toys Announced at Licensing Show

Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

The licensing show this week has brought out news for nearly every big property as studios vie for marketing positions for both film and television programming. One such announcement is that a company called Tonner will be revealing a new Narnia collection. I’ve never heard of Tonner, but with the slate they have, I’m sure it’ll be great! Here’s the report:

Tonner will unveil a extremely limited ‘White Witch’ 16-inch Tonner Character Figure from The Chronicles of Narnia. The collection will include all four children, each authorized likenesses of the film’s actors, and a regular line 18-inch White Witch. The children will debut in Tonner’s Fall/Holiday Collection for fourth quarter release. Additional upcoming Tonner releases include Pirates of the Caribbean and Mary Poppins.

Apted Official, Dawn Treader starts filming January 2008

Tuesday, June 19th, 2007

Michael Apted has signed on to direct Walt Disney Pictures/Walden Media’s “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.”

This is the third installment in the series that includes the 2005 film “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” and the upcoming 2008 release of “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.” “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” will begin filming in January and it is set for a May 1, 2009, release date.

Among the cast members who will reprise their “Narnia” roles are Ben Barnes, Georgie Henley and Skandar Keynes.

Mark Johnson returns once again as producer. Andrew Adamson, who directed the first two films in the series, will continue his involvement by also serving as a producer on the project.

“We’re thrilled that (Apted) will be directing ‘The Voyage of the Dawn Treader‘ and feel that he brings his own unique sensibilities, filmmaking experience, and vision to the project,” said Oren Aviv, president of production for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. “This latest ‘Narnia’ adventure will take people to an entirely different side of Narnia that no one has ever seen before, and is filled with lots of action, adventure, magic and wonder. We think moviegoers are going to be thrilled with this all-new installment.”

Walden Media CEO Cary Granat added, “Michael Apted’s extraordinary body of work has prepared him to tackle this enormously exciting adventure. We just had a wonderful experience working with him on ‘Amazing Grace,’ and we are confident that Michael will deliver a terrific film.”
