Prince Caspian to Film in Slovenia

Sunday, December 31st, 2006

Slovenia’s POP TV channel has recently reported that parts of Prince Caspian will be filmed in the beautiful Soca River region.

Although the filmmakers searched for locations all around Europe, the Soca River and its surroundings proved to be some of the most memorable. They decided to shoot part of the story in Slovenia following successful talks with the Bovec municipal council and officials.

Danijel Krivec, Mayor of Bovec: “They fell in love with the landscape and the views of the river, and especially the colour of the Soca. It was these key points that attracted them.

We’re still coordinating some details, but the procedures are underway so there shouldn’t be any obstacles.”

Filming in the region will begin in May or June next year.

Guillermo del Toro Turned Down LWW

Thursday, December 28th, 2006

Guillermo del ToroAccording to Yahoo News, Guillermo del Toro, director of such films as “Blade II” and “Mimic,” rejected directing the first Narnia movie “The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe” because, as a former Catholic, he could not see himself bringing Aslan to life.

The Mexican filmmaker is instead working on a movie called “Pan’s Labyrinth” which incorporates aspects from classic children’s literature, including Narnia. He is known for exploring mature themes in fantasy films and creating visually appealing films.

[He] was asked to direct “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” but he turned it down because, as a lapsed Catholic, he couldn’t see himself bringing Aslan the lion back to life.

Instead, he put his dark, fervid imagination to work on an original story, “Pan’s Labyrinth,” a bloody and harrowing fairy tale that incorporates elements from C.S. Lewis’ beloved Christian allegory and various other classics of children’s literature.

Set during the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, “Pan’s Labyrinth” shows why del Toro’s sensibility is somehow both perfectly suited and utterly alien to the gentle “Narnia.” He subjects his hero, an 11-year-old girl whose mother has married a captain in Gen. Francisco Franco’s army, to shocking violence and vexing moral quandaries.

“I’m not proselytizing anything about a lion resurrecting. I’m not trying to sell you into a point. I’m just doing a little parable about disobedience and choice,” del Toro said. “This is my version of that universe, not only `Narnia,’ but that universe of children’s literature.”

William Moseley Interviewed; Finds Narnia in Greenwich Village

Friday, December 22nd, 2006

William MoseleyWilliam Moseley is the 18-year-old Brit who plays the oldest brother Peter in the smash hit “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” the first story in C.S. Lewis’ “Chronicles of Narnia.” After garnering great reviews and an ardent following of teen screamers, Moseley took the autumn off from his life in England to explore acting classes and wander the streets of Greenwich Village.

Just like the Narnia story, Moseley’s energy makes one truly believe that he finds wonder behind every cupboard door. His excitement and joy colors everything he encounters here, from acting classes to cup cakes to Downtown street life. I recently spoke to the young actor about his enthusiasm for the Village, before he left for New Zealand to shoot the second Narnia film, Prince Caspian.

You did have a plan beyond breakfast, right?

I came to hone my craft a bit before I head off to New Zealand for the next installment of Narnia, “Prince Caspian.” I find the atmosphere here, in New York so motivating. It’s funny, I knew I would have one class to take with Sheila Gray, but I worried I wouldn’t be busy enough, and now I am constantly doing scenes with people from my classes, going to theater and the movies.

For me acting is so much about confidence. If you believe you are good enough you give that off and it makes you actually better. So studying with a teacher where I am being exposed to method and sensory work seems to have moved my acting to a different level.

What’s next after the Village?

Well, I leave for New Zealand at the end of January, and then we shoot there and in Prague, Slovenia and Poland. This role is going to be very physical, with lots of battles. I have been training in Gleason’s gym in Brooklyn. It is a place where they see me, as rather smallish boy with a funny accent, and they make me earn my respect there. I have been studying sword fighting as well, which is sort of a dream come true because when I was a boy my mum wouldn’t let me fight or kick box because she thought I’d just use it against my sister. Now I am getting to do it all.

William Moseley’s favorite Village spots

Magnolia Café: “Yes, I would wait in line for a cupcake.”

Cowgirl Café: “I love that I get to have a taste of the south and still stay in New York.”

Fat Cat: “Pool tables and shuffle board— what could be bad about that?”

Bread and Pastry Café: “For the paninni. Need I say more?”

Cafe doma: “Decaf tea and a place to write or read or just look out the big window”

Richard Taylor’s Christmas Message, Worked on Prince Caspian

Friday, December 22nd, 2006

WETA e-mailed us to share a Christmas Greeting with you, from Richard Taylor. In it, he reveals that he did, in fact, get the chance to work on Prince Caspian. The extent is not yet known, but we’re glad that they were able to be involved once again! Here’s the message:

“Hi Everyone!

It’s been a funny old year with a number of ups and downs and I guess some people would say a few more downs than ups, what with the losing of the Halo project and also hearing the sad news about The Hobbit. But, with the view that the cup is always half full I see that we’ve had a very exciting and wonderful year regardless of these hiccups.

We’ve completed 45 separate jobs for different clients from New Zealand and around the world in the past 12 months and have now begun work on other wonderful and exciting challenges that I’m sure will give us a huge amount of creative opportunity going into the New Year.

There have been some wonderful highlights including: the chance to work once again with Andrew Adamson and his team on Prince Caspian; Getting to work with friends from years past in the form of Chloe Smith and Rob Tappert from old Hercules days who have been producing David Slade’s adaptation of 30 Days of Nights; The completion of Jonathan King’s wonderful New Zealand horror comedy, Black Sheep; And continuing our on-going development work on Peter [Jackson]’s future projects.

But on a personal note I reflect on the year and of course the greatest thing that’s happened for the Weta Workshop team is the fact that four more Weta babies have been born to people that work here at the Workshop. I think it’s a good sign of stability in a relatively fragile and turbulent industry that four more people have found the confidence to begin a family and enjoy all that this can bring.

From myself and Tania we wish you all our best for the holiday season and thank you for your on-going support and interest in what the team here at Weta Workshop are continuing to grow and develop. I look forward to catching up in the New Year and I’m sure the Weta Bug will give you an update on where we are all at.

So here’s to lots of merry cheer and hoping that Santa read the list and the stocking is full this Christmas.

Cheers to you all

Richard”
