Happy Birthday C.S. Lewis!

Wednesday, November 29th, 2006

Today is C.S. Lewis’ 108th Birthday! Thanks to Claire for reminding us of this fact! Here’s a little bit of info about the author for you. You can read more about him by clicking on C.S. Lewis on the menu.

Clive Staples Lewis was born in Belfast, Ireland (now in Northern Ireland) on November 29, 1898. His father was Albert James Lewis (1863-1929), a solicitor whose father had come to Ireland from Wales. His mother was Flora Augusta Hamilton Lewis (1862-1908), the daughter of a Church of Ireland priest. He had one older brother, Warren Hamilton Lewis (Warnie). At the age of four, shortly after his dog Jacksie was hit by a car, Lewis announced that his name was now Jacksie. At first he would answer to no other name, but later accepted Jacks which became Jack, the name by which he was known to friends and family for the rest of his life. At six his family moved into Little Lea, the house the elder Mr. Lewis built for Mrs. Lewis, in Strandtown, Northern Ireland.

Having won a scholarship to University College, Oxford in 1916, Lewis enlisted the following year in the British Army as World War I raged on, and was commissioned an officer in the third Battalion, Somerset Light Infantry. Lewis arrived at the front line in the Somme Valley in France on his eighteenth birthday.

Georgie Henley switches on Ilkley lights

Tuesday, November 28th, 2006

Chronicles of Narnia star Georgie Henley made the switch-on of Ilkley’s Christmas lights a magical evening on Saturday.

The schoolgirl film star, who lives in Ilkley, told the many families gathered on The Grove how the town’s festive lights had always been a highlight of the year for her.

She told crowds that of all the places she had visited on her film-making travels, including New Zealand, Japan and the United States, she still liked Ilkley the best.

Georgie, 11, played Lucy Pevensie in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, the first of Disney’s big-screen adaptations of C S Lewis’ classic children’s books. She’ll return to the Narnia set in early 2007 to start shooting the sequel, Prince Caspian.

Crowds waited in a cold and breezy Ilkley town centre for the young actress to make her appearance and push the brightly coloured plunger to light up the town for Christmas.

The build-up to the lights switch-on began with some festive singing, led by Ilkley singer, Shirley Britton, and a parade of schoolchildren, air cadets. Then Father Christmas aboard a horse-drawn carriage, made his way to The Grove from Springs lane, led by Town Crier Chris Richards.

Priest recalls youthful enchantment with Narnia books

Thursday, November 23rd, 2006

“C.S. Lewis in his writings teaches us that the way to be good evangelizers is to open the imagination especially of young people by teaching them to think and to dream,” said Father Stephen Penna.

“He also teaches us that we are called to read stories that provoke the imagination of children.”

Penna, a professor at St. Joseph’s College at the University of Alberta, made his comments during a panel discussion on C.S. Lewis at a symposium on Lewis at Newman Theological College Nov. 18.

Other panelists were Joseph Pearce, an author and professor of literature at Ave Maria University in Florida and Archbishop Thomas Collins.

“This is a happy moment for me because for the first time in my life as a priest and as an academic I get to speak about someone who really shaped my thinking as a child. I am a self-confessed C.S. Lewis nerd,” Penna declared.

“My happiest thing when I was a kid was to (stay home) sick and curl up in my bed and open up the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe or one of the seven marvellous books and dip with Lewis’ guiding hand into that (enchanting) world which created in my young mind a space for playing in a world that was exciting, that was adventurous, that was filled with parables.”

In an interview Penna said Lewis “writes books that don’t talk down to children. He writes books that treat children with respect and sets their imaginations on fire, especially with the notion of a wonderful world and worlds dwelling behind the reality that people see.”

Prince Caspian Shooting in New Zealand, more!

Thursday, November 23rd, 2006

Thanks to “TheWhiteWolf”, and a site called “The Technos Guild,” we can confirm that Prince Caspian will be shot in Auckland, New Zealand during February and March 2007. After shooting wraps in New Zealand, filming moves for a heftier four months of production in Prague, Czech Republic. We’re not sure if the shoot will move to Ireland, as was rumor.

Prince Caspian is filming under the pseudonym “Toastie.” The Prince Caspian production company is named “Wimbleweather Ltd” after one of the characters in the story, a Giant. The film pseudonym is a stark contrast to the one used for LWW: One Hundred Year Winter. This is more than likely because of the change in setting for the story. The Production Company name suggests a huge project is to be filmed. Pretty exciting stuff, as it gives us some definite hints at what is to come.

Here’s what it says on a New Zealand site:

Toastie
Format: 35mm Feature Film
Dates: February – March 2007 (NZ Sector)
Location: Auckland and Prague
Production Co: Wimbleweather Ltd
Director: Andrew Adamson

This is in line with The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, which was filmed under the titles: One Hundred Year Winter and Paravel. It filmed in various locations in New Zealand and the Czech Republic.
