Empire Magazine Talks to Tilda Swinton and Mark Johnson

From the British movie magazine EMPIRE:

It’s no surprise that, when first approached to play the evil queen of frostbitten fantasy-world Narnia, Tilda Swinton had reservations. After all, why would a British arthouse doyenne, best known for her work with Derek Jarman, ever imagine herself as a polar-bear whipping poster girl for a multi-million-dollar, Disney-funded fairy tale? It’s not even like she was a fan of C. S. Lewis’ book, the much loved tale of how four World War II evacuee children quest to free Narnia from the queen’s wintry curse.

“It’s a tall order to play the epitome of all evil,” she confides at the production’s base in Auckland. “She’s not actually human. She’s really a cipher; she’s whatever these children need her to be, to make them capable of becoming what they need to become by the end of the tale.”

“But,” she adds with a smile, “I am very white!” Certainly, physically speaking, the none-more-pale Swinton’s a perfect choice, and any doubts she had about the project were soon dispelled by the sheer grandeur of the sets, from her own Great Hall, a cathedral-like cavern with massive icicle-pillars, to the snowy woodland built in an equestrian centre that matches Pinewood’s 007 sound stage for size.

Given the project’s scale, location and material, Lord of the Rings comparisons are rife. But the filmmakers themselves are keen to emphasise the distinctions. “A lot of people have described it as a cross between Rings and Harry Potter” says producer Mark Johnson. “We’ll I’ve now seen a lot of it cut together, and what’s wonderful is that it’s its own animal. I’m a big fan of those movies, but this couldn’t be more different.”

Dillon, Camp, and Chapman: Inspired by Narnia Soundtrack

The artists that will be featured on the Soundtrack of music inspired by The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe are coming out of the woodwork, and recording now.

Bethany Dillon
BethanyDillon.com
Christian recording artist Bethany Dillon is recording a song called “Hero.” From her website: Okay, so have you seen the teaser trailer for “The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe” yet??? HHOOOOLLLYYY SMOOOOKESSSS! A friend of mine sent it to me the other day (thanks Jay) and we watched it (Brad, Ed, Pap, J.R. McNeely and me) last night right after we finished mixing the song that’s going to be on the ‘inspired’ soundtrack… it’s called “Hero”… anyway, we were all in awe. I had goosebumps on my goosebumps, as Mom would say. Aslan looked so STRONG! And the wardrobe looked so mysterious and dangerous… oh, you just need to see it. It’s at MovieFone (I think) on AOL. Yep. Tell me what you think.

Jeremy Camp

Jeremy is in the studio this weekend with producers Adam Watts and Andy Todd recording the single for The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

At this time, these are the only three artists that we know of on the album, we’ll keep updating the list as we learn more!

Why Uncle Andrew Couldn’t Hear the Animals Speak

In April NarniaFans brought you an exclusive chapter from the forthcoming book “The Chronicles of Narnia and Philosophy”. We are proud to be able to present another chapter that you’ll only be able to find on NarniaWeb. This chapter is on a fascinating topic, Why Uncle Andrew Couldn’t Hear the Animals Speak and is written by Kevin Kinghorn, a Philosophy Tutor at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford.

One of the most fascinating scenes in the Chronicles of Narnia features an incident that is truly puzzling. The scene takes place in The Magician’s Nephew. Four lucky humans (Digory, Polly, Uncle Andrew, and Frank the Cabby) and one very unhappy Witch (Jadis) watch as Aslan sings the new world of Narnia into existence. When the newly-created Talking Animals begin to speak, the human witnesses are amazed to find that they can understand them. Everyone, that is, except Uncle Andrew. All he can hear is barkings, howlings, and the like (MN, Ch. 10, p. 75). But why? Why wasn’t Uncle Andrew able to understand like everyone else?

Narnia Toys Revealed!

We first saw the Chroncles of Narnia line at the UK ToyFair and we’ve been raving about it ever since. This looks to be one of Hasbro’s best quality lines to date, and if the movie lives up to expectations it could be a monster line.

So far we’ve only been able to show you a couple of pieces, but Entertainment Earth has now revealed more of the line.

From a figure prespective there are 2 main Narnia lines. The action figures (as we suspected when we saw them in January) are 5″ scale. It’s a bit of a shame as had they been 6″ then the monsters would have gone great with Lord of the Rings figures to make a great fanasty collection. However we’re hoping that because of the size of the larger characters they won’t look too out of place.

The other figure line is a mini figure line. It reminds me very much of the old Armies of Middle-Earth line, so if you loved those, you’ll love the new Chronicles of Narnia Battle line.

Anyways, here is a look at some of what is coming your way

EMI Music – the world’s largest independent music company – will work with Walt Disney Studios and Walden Media to produce two soundtracks of music inspired by what is one of 2005’s most anticipated films, a live action adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ bestselling classic, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. The two soundtracks, to be released by EMI on worldwide basis, will feature songs from some of today’s best selling artists.

EMI Music’s Nashville-based EMI CMG will release a soundtrack of songs inspired by the film featuring mainstream pop and rock artists on October 25. A second record featuring today’s most popular artists in the Christian music genre will be the first to release on September 27. Radio singles and music videos from each record will bow in August.

“The appeal of C.S. Lewis’ classic series is universal, and his writings have stood the test of time bringing pure enjoyment to generations of readers,” said David Munns, Chairman and CEO, EMI Music North America. “EMI is delighted to be working closely with Walt Disney Pictures and Walden Media to deliver music inspired by The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe film to fans around the world.”

The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, first published in 1950, is the second and best-known novel in the seven-part Chronicles of Narnia series by noted Oxford author C.S. Lewis. The series has sold more than 85 million books globally to date and has been published in 29 different languages.

“Aligning Disney and Walden Media with EMI Music worldwide made perfect sense for this project right from the start. EMI’s global reach, internationally acclaimed artist roster and diversely experienced management team ensures us the consummate music collaborator for this awesome property. It’s really a pleasure for us to team up with EMI on this one,” said Mitchell Leib, President, Music & Soundtracks Walt Disney Pictures and Television/Buena Vista Music Group.

The film, produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Walden Media, will be released worldwide on December 9.

The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is directed by Andrew Adamson, who also directed the Academy Award winning animated film Shrek and Shrek 2, produced by Academy Award winning Mark Johnson (Rain Man), with a screenplay by Emmy Award winning Ann Peacock (A Kiss Before Dying), and special effects provided by WETA, the winner of four Academy Awards for The Lord of The Rings.

“Keeping the integrity of C.S. Lewis’s cherished work has always been the #1 goal for Walden and Disney,” said Lindsay Fellows, Vice President Motion Picture Music, AFG/Walden Media/Bristol Bay. “EMI’s team understands this and their musical contributions will have a major impact on his legacy and this amazing film.”

LWW Exclusive Game Footage!

For the first time in the history of Narnia, you are invited to take your very own steps through the magical wardrobe of C.S. Lewis’ masterpiece, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. Through the intricate works of technology, Buena Vista Games has begun the journey of crafting an interactive adventure for the Sony PlayStation 2, Microsoft XBox, Nintendo GameCube, and personal computers.

Unexpectedly nestled in the loud crowd of the Electronic Entertainment Expo in sunny Los Angeles, California, Buena Vista Games has recreated a small part of Narnia for eager spectators to travel. The first memorable steps are through a giant recreation of that mystical wardrobe we have all crafted in our imagination. Immediately, travelers are greeted with beautiful pieces of Narnian armor and weaponry (sadly protected behind beautiful curved glass cases), and the grotesque heads of the White Witches minions. At the end of the wardrobe hall, one is ferociosly greeted by Olmin the Minotaur (the actual suit and animatronic used in the movie). Recreated in splendid detail, Olmin is merely a breath-taking distraction of what Buena Vista is really showcasing.

Though in its early stages, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe video game is a wonderful adventure for all sorts of fans. Though very incomplete at this stage, the game immediately puts you into the shoes of Peter, Susan, and Lucy on desperate attempt to rescue their lost brother. Fighting on a frozen creek in Narnia, the player is able to at any moment switch between which character he/she is using, creating some very dynamic gameplay elements. In this first stage, the three siblings needed to fight off wolves and other nasty creatures while attempting to break through iced up dams (accompanied, of course, by beavers). Doing so involved using regular attacks (Peter’s sword, Susan’s bow, and Lucy’s punches), special attacks (Peter has a power strike, Susan sings a song to put creatures to sleep, and Lucy is able to heal the health of the entire party). Players controlled by the computer fight alongside of the human players, but can be rotated at anytime to vary the battle. Additionally, players must also “team up” with one of the sibling to complete objectives. In this first level, Lucy jumps onto Susan’s shoulders in order to reach high enough to break through the dam.

The second level involves only Edmund and Peter in a fierce battle against Ginarrbrik the Dwarf. Apparently, he’s been crossed and now needs to be put in his place. In order to do this, Peter and Edmund must run around, avoiding Ginarrbrik’s attacks. Eventually, the dwarf will become dizzy and the brothers can tie him to a tree. The brothers then proceed to attack him until he cuts through his ropes, and starts the whole party again until his health his drained. In the final version of the game, players will also need to light Ginarrbrik’s beard on fire.

After the dwarf is defeated, Peter and Edmund are confronted with anklebiters and two giant Cyclops. In order to break free of them, Edmund picks up a torch with which to light bails of hay on fire. Once on fire, either Peter or Edmund can kick the bails into the enemy in order to defeat them.

As you can see, the gameplay is quite varied and will make for excellent cooperation modes. Of note, the games graphics are very beautiful. The artists have accurately modeled the children’s faces, make great use of detail and precision. The games environments are also very well crafted, complete with shimmering ice, blazing fires, and lots of movement on screen. One scene that was particularly impressive was an invasion of Minotaurs against the children. The screen was literally full of the giant beasts, all while retaining very smooth gameplay.

Time with the LWW videogame was limited, as a full crowd of Narnia explorers waited to play the game. To add to the sadness, the exit of Narnia required a march past a museum of frozen Narnian creatures, captured in their despair. All said and done, however, the short adventure through Narnia is one that rekindled a passion for the world of C.S. Lewis. Expect big things with this game and, of course, the movie.

I leave you with an assortment of photographs – expect video, more in-game shots, and additional information tomorrow!
