Walden Media believes that the Smart Money’s on Family

Tuesday, December 28th, 2004

Though remaining focused on big-budget action films, several big studios are turning to Walden Media to capture some of the family-film market.

Financed by billionaire investor Philip Anschutz, Walden began mining “nice” films in 2001. “There’s been a desire to grow an underserved market with non-cynical family entertainment, films that provide inspirational experiences,” says Walden Media CEO and co-founder Cary Granat.

Walden and Disney teamed on 2003’s Holes, which is based on the Louis Sachar novel and screenplay about a boy who is unjustly sent to a detention center. The $40 million film made $71 million worldwide, and DVD sales have been strong. Less successful was this year’s Walden/Disney remake of Around the World in 80 Days, which cost about $140 million but made just $51.5 million worldwide, a sign that these films, like others, carry risk and aren’t automatic cash cows.

Walden already has struck partnership deals with Disney, 20th Century Fox and Paramount that could result in more than a dozen family films. Walden and Disney will release The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, a live-action film based on the C.S. Lewis children’s classic, in December 2005.

The studios are hoping for a Harry Potter-size franchise, with six more films based on Lewis’ novels to follow over the next decade.

Merry Christmas!

Friday, December 24th, 2004

Merry Christmas from Narnia Fans! It’s this time of year that we celebrate the birth of our Lord and visit with family and friends. Take some time to sit back and reflect of what a year this has been. Right now, our armed forces are overseas fighting for the safety of the United States, away from family during these important holidays, and many are without members of their family to bring comfort and joy. So during this holiday season, remember that the most important thing that you can do, is make others feel accepted. Bring a little light of love into everyone you pass, and perhaps you’ll save a few lives, or give someone that much needed glimmer of hope. Have a warm and safe holiday season!

We wish all of you and yours a safe and wonderful Christmas. Visit with your family. When it comes down to it, they’re the ones that will stick by you through good times and bad. And yes, friends can be considered family. Celebrate the day that Christ has come into the world, to die for us!

“I Celebrate The Day”
Relient K
Deck the Halls, Bruise your Hand, or Let it Snow Baby, Let it Reindeer

And with this Christmas wish is missed
The point I could convey
If only I could find the words to say to let You know how much You’ve touched my life
Because here is where You’re finding me, in the exact same place as New Year’s eve
And from a lack of my persistency
We’re less than half as close as I want to be

And the first time
That You opened Your eyes did You realize
that You would be my Savior
And the first breath that left Your lips
Did You know that it would change this world forever

And so this Christmas I’ll compare the things I felt in prior years
To what this midnight made so clear
That You have come to meet me here

To look back and think that
This baby would one day save me
In the hope that what You did
That you were born so I might live
To look back and think that
This baby would one day save me

And I, I celebrate the day
That You were born to die
So I could one day pray for You to save my life

Tuesday, December 21st, 2004

With the building expectation for the feature-film of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, BBC Audio Books have recently reissued Brian Sibley’s classic radio dramatization of CS Lewis’ entire Chronicles of Narnia (from The Magician’s Nephew to The Last Battle) in a limited edition.

Featuring a cast that includes Maurice Denham, Martin Jarvis, Fiona Shaw, Sylvester McCoy and John Sessions, the seven double-CD sets come handsomely boxed in their own ‘wardrobe’ and are accompanied by a booklet ‘Beyond the Wardrobe Door’, in which Brian tells how the series was brought to the microphone.

It’s a Wrap! The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe Finishes Production

Saturday, December 18th, 2004

The filming of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe has wrapped in New Zealand. We have received word from our sources that the four children are on their way home tomorrow, December 19th, and that director Andrew Adamson was very happy with their performance.

UPDATE: We have received information that the crew (and possibly the cast) had a final dinner together Sunday night at the Dux De Lux restaurant in Christchurch and at midnight had a final party at The Mansion nightclub.

The filmmakers will take a break for Christmas and after the first of the year will begin 11 months of post-production.

Download the Preview now! I’m working on getting screencaps up. Would have had them up sooner, but I received “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King Special Extended DVD Edition” a day early, and you know what that means. I spent most of the evening visiting Middle-earth!

Anyway, the preview of Narnia is available for download at some links below, and I’ve taken 1000 screenshots and cut it down to 100.

The movie clip is 25 MB and is in Quicktime format. To download the movie, try downloading from AICN below or one of the mirrors. Right click and click “Save-as”.

AICN’s Marathon sees LWW Progress

Monday, December 13th, 2004

AICN runs a marathon viewing of movies that runs for a 24 hour period once a year, and each year they get sneak peeks at movies that are sometimes still in production, and others that are soon to come, along with trailers and behind the scenes for movies that are coming much much later. This time, they were treated to a behind the scenes clip from Narnia. Apparently the Minotaur stood out as the centerpiece of what they saw.

(Clip): The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. This was mostly a behind the scenes look at the WETA progress being made on the design of the film. Some of the creatures looked frighteningly similar to LOTR while the Minotaur stood out as an exceptionally cool design…..

…..The minotaur from THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE looked photo-real. Nice.
