Could The Voyage of the Dawn Treader be released in 3D?

Monday, March 30th, 2009

Fox has revealed plans today to continue ramping up the number of 3D films that they release.  This year, they are releasing two films in 3D: Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs and Avatar.  Fox Filmed Entertainment chairman and CEO Jim Gianopulos announced, at ShoWest today, that they plan on releasing three films in 3D in 2010.

What he didn’t mention are the names of those three films.  In 2010, they have a few films that would make great potential 3D releases, that we know of.  One of those is the remake of Fantastic Voyage, which is about a scientist with a potentially fatal health problem takes a risk on his only chance of survival: for five of his colleagues to be miniaturized in a ship and injected into his bloodstream.

The other film on the list of 2010 releases includes The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.  Does that mean we have the potential to see a Narnia film in 3D?  Definitely!

Micheal Flaherty

Micheal Flaherty

Micheal Flaherty, President of Walden Media, will be a special guest of Asbury College’s Engaging Culture Weekend, April 23-24.

Flaherty will speak in chapel services April 24 at 10 a.m. in Hughes Auditorium. Later that afternoon he will hold a special forum with Asbury College’s C.S. Lewis Scholar, Dr. Devin Brown, titled “Spiritual and Character Lessons from the Narnia Films.” He is also serving a judge for the weekend’s Highbridge Film Festival on April 25.

Prof. Greg Bandy, who produces the Engaging Culture Weekend under the sponsorship of a Lilly Grant, underlines the impact of Flaherty’s presence. “We’re incredibly excited to have Micheal Flaherty as our special guest for this weekend. We’ve been working with Walden Media for several years for good reason. We share their values for stories that matter. Also, Mr. Flaherty has a distinguished background as a visionary educator. We’ve had some good synergies as a result.”

Studios Interested in Narnia Franchise

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

If you’ve read the L.A. Times article that Mike posted about, you might have read far enough to know that there are other suitors for the Narnia franchise.  We’ve been speculating that 20th Century Fox would want the franchise, but we’ll take a look now, at the studios that the article says are showing strong interest in the series.

20th Century Fox: They have a good relationship with Walden Media, especially with the Fox Walden label that they released a few movies under.  None of the movies released together have done very well, though, and I’m sure they’re looking to change that around and have a few hits together.  Doing the Narnia series would be a good bet for that.

Is Disney back on Voyage of the Dawn Treader?

Friday, January 16th, 2009

Walt Disney PicturesSomeone has posted on Wikipedia about a potential deal between Walden Media and Walt Disney Pictures.  It’s an uncited addition to the page, and my research into whomever it is that posted the data has turned up with nothing to verify the source.

On January 14, Disney renegotiated with Walden Media to produce the movie after coming to an agreement on the budget of the film.

I haven’t read that anywhere else, and when there’s no citation of the source, that’s where wikipedia falls short.

Take this news with a grain of salt until it is verified by a Press Release from either Disney or Walden Media.  We’ll try to do some investigations of our own to see what we can dig up, in the meantime.  It could be that this is a hoax.

UPDATE: A registered editor of Wikipedia has removed the statement.  No citation came about, and the person that posted it was probably confusing this with Watchmen, where 20th Century Fox and Warner Brothers came to terms regarding the release of Watchmen.

AAP Honors Walden Media

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

Walden MediaThe film company behind the adaption of The Chronicles of Narnia is being honored by the AAP. For its educational efforts, and for raising the awareness of various children’s titles by turning them into movies, Walden Media is receiving the 2009 AAP Honors award.

The company was founded in 1999 and has made films based on a number of iconic children’s titles — including Holes, Because of Winn-Dixie and Bridge to Terabithia — while establishing a significant educational outreach program in the process. Walden’s president, Michael Flaherty, will be presented with the honor at the AAP’s Annual Meeting in New York on March 11.

Congratulations, Walden Media!

Why Fox Should Pick Up Narnia 3

Thursday, January 1st, 2009

Walden Media is one of the few film companies out there today which consistently puts out quality family films (”Narnia,” City of Ember, Bridge to Terabithia, Charlotte’s Web), but unfortunately, few of their films have made enough money to warrant being called true successes. The first (and perhaps second) “Narnia” movie was box office gold, but Terabithia, Charlotte’s Web, and a few others make only moderate amounts of money and some Walden films are downright flops (City of Ember, The Seeker). Now, Disney in effect wants to cancel  “The Chronicles of Narnia.”

Disney jumps ship on next Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

Wow, when I woke up today, on Christmas Eve, I did not expect to read this headline all over my inbox. I did notice an awful lot of stories with Narnia in the title, and as I started to look at them, the first one I noticed was this headline: Disney jumps ship on next “Narnia.” My heart sank. Disney has been so good to us, here at NarniaFans.com, that I was looking forward to working with them again on the next Narnia.

Here’s hoping that another studio takes the opportunity to pick up where Disney left off. Come on, Fox! Get on board, and do this series to the end! We’re rooting for you!

From Reuters/The Hollywood Reporter:

“The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” will have to sail without Disney.

The studio said Tuesday that for budgetary and logistical reasons it will not exercise its option to co-produce and co-finance the next “Narnia” movie with producer Walden Media.

The third entry in the series, based on the classic books by C.S. Lewis, was in preproduction and set for a spring shoot for a planned May 2010 release. The development puts the participation of the talent attached in doubt. Michael Apted was on board to direct a script by Steven Knight. The key players of the second installment, “Prince Caspian” — Ben Barnes, Georgie Henley, William Moseley and Anna Popplewell — were to return for the third film.

The White Witch is gone, the realm is ruled by a cruel tyrant and Aslan has been missing for over a thousand years.

The four children embark on a remarkable journey to restore magic and glory to the land. Accompanied by Trumpkin, a valiant dwarf, Reepicheep the talking mouse and a suspicious Black Dwarf named Nikabrik, they raise an army of Narnians to rise up against the evil king Miraz.
