You’re filming The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of The Dawn Treader in Australia at the moment, how’s that going?

Will Poulter: Its really good fun thank you, I’m really enjoying myself but I am missing home quite a bit, especially my family and friends. Although I will be sad to leave I will be really pleased to be home for Christmas.

Your character, Eustace Scrubb, isn’t very well behaved and of course you played the ‘most badly behaved kid in school’ in Son of Rambow. How do you keep getting these type of roles?

Will Poulter: I know, I would really like to play a nice character for once! I feel quite bad about having to play those characters and I hope there is no one like Eustace Scrubb!

The famous introduction in the book by CS Lewis is: “There was a boy called Eustace Clarence Scrubb, and he almost deserved it.” Would you say that’s a fair evaluation of your character?

Will Poulter: Absolutely. He is a complete brat, he’s obnoxious, rude, selfish and cowardly and has no respect for anyone other than himself. However he does become a much better adjusted person at the end of the book.

Title: God in the Dock

Author: CS Lewis

Publisher: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company (October 1994)

ISBN-10: 0802808689

ISBN-13: 978-0802808684

Summary:

God in the Dock: Essays on Theology and Ethics, is a collection of essays written by CS Lewis over the course of his life that examine a wide range of issues, ranging from the ethical issue of vivisection, to the importance of mythology, to the celebration of Christmas, to the reading of old books, to the still divisive issue of women as clergy.

Review

God in the Dock is another discussion worthy collection of essays penned by CS Lewis. Much like Christian reflections, God in the Dock, and Of Other Worlds, was published posthumously by the Lewis Estates, collecting several of his essays that he wrote through out his life-time.

This book’s title comes from the eponymous essay, “God in the Dock”. The term comes from the courtroom usage of a trail. The Bench is where the judge sits, while the witness or person accused sits in the dock. In the essay, Lewis argues that in our day in age, we find ourselves examining God in the same way, wondering how a God who is good, and wonderful, and loving and merciful and compassionate can allow things like war , famine, disease, and poverty to exist.

It is certainly question that bears asking and that is the very same subject that many of these essays tackle. From essays on pain, to prayer, to the deity of Christ, to the incarnation, Lewis not only examines God and Christianity and touch ethical issues like vivisection. This book also features and essay looking at the issue of Priestesses in the church, written back in 1948, an issue that still remains a hot-button item in many churches as they debate the role of women in the church.

Well some of the essays aren’t’ nearly s divisive, there are three that deal with the subject of Christmas and commercialism, and one on the importance of reading of old books, they all offer some food for thought. A few of the essays are even written in a dialogue style similar to the works of Aristotle and Plato where a “teacher” is having a discussion with a “student”. Another satirical essay, “Xmas and Christmas” is written like a lost chapter from a book by the historian Herodotus on the celebration of Christmas in England and brilliantly shows the juxtaposition or the “commercial” holiday versus the “true” holiday.

Two other unique essays in this book are the “short bits” which is a collection of essays Lewis started but never completed, and a reprint of a discussion Sherwood E. Wirt of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, that looks at the claims of Christ, the importance of coming to him, space travel, and the then emerging Evangelical movement in America. The Discussion with Mr. Wirt also briefly highlights a meeting between CS Lewis and the Reverend Billy Graham and Lewis’s impressions of him.

Their certainly are some areas of controversy with this book. Perhaps the most controversial is that he also argues that mythology can help provide a good starting point for those who do not know Christ in his essay “The Grand Myth” as the myths contain many symbols that can point to Christ. Also he warns in his essay, “ The Dangers of National Repentance” that national repentance may actually be dangerous, as individuals may neglect to repent of their own personal sins and focus only on the much larger societal ills. In his essay on women clergy he also speaks out against the issue of having them serve in such a position. These areas of controversy are certainly helpful s it can get us honestly talking about such things.

While to some there is certainly plenty of material in this book that is covered in some of Lewis’s other works, these essays are merely the framework for them. By reading this we get a much fuller picture of some of Lewis’ ideas. Once again, Lewis perfectly demonstrates in God in the Dock just why it is he is the undisputed “arm-chair theologian” of the 20th century. His words in these essays are clear, concise, and still thought provoking and just as relevant today as they were when he first wrote them.

As many of you may know, our fearless webmaster, Paul is currently on vacation and cannot respond to the mailbag. However since he’s been gone, the mail has piled up on the kitchen counter here at NarniaFans. After cleaning out the fridge, I figured I’d hold up some of your letters to the light and see what you all sent in and answer for him.

Hello my name is Lucy. I live near Cleveland where the set for the voyage of the dawn treader is being made, and I love Narnia. I realised, that I look like Georgie Henley (Lucy) and I was wondering if she needs an understudy because I would love to be it. I can talk English, I look like her and I have acting experience in movies and ads. It would be such a delight if you wrote back. Thanks you! -Lucy (that IS my real name)

Unfortunately, we do not have any power in cast/crew selections like that. Also, while Georgie may need a body double, or a stunt double, she wouldn’t need an understudy. Those are only employed in stage, not film. The main reason for that is if someone gets sick or hurt during the production of a movie they can shoot the scenes they won’t need them in while they recover, but you don’t have that luxury on stage. Sorry! Best of luck in your acting endeavors. -Jonathon

Hey just wondering i live in Australia and wanted to no when the Dawn treader premiere was? i really want to go…me and best friend are so obsessed…anyway if you know please let me know. thank you very much – Harmony.

I just did some checking on that one and Voyage of the Dawn Treader should premier in “The Land Down Under” on December 9th. Lucky Ausies. -Jonathon

I was wondering if and when they were coming out with a new movie? -Lacian

Your question has a two part answer: First , yes there will be a new movie, and Voyage of the Dawn Treader is currently in production. Second it will be released in the States on December 10th. -Jonathon

Dear Susan, Peter, Edmund, and Lucy, My name is Rachel. I saw both movies, and I love them!!!!!!!!!!!! I saw them two times each and had them both memorized!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You were the perfect actors, I should know I’m an actor also. I wish I could meet you in person but I dream that I know you! Thats the good thing about being an actor!!!!!, You can dream of every thing you want to! I have not met you but I LOVE YOU ALL BUNCHES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOVE -RACHEL

Well, Rachel, on behalf of Susan, Peter, Edmund and Lucy, they love you too. Thanks for writing! -Jonathon

That’s it for this week! Keep them coming folks.

His debut as the eponymous royal in the second Narnia movie, 2008’s Prince Caspian, helped the film to rack up over $400 million at the box office, and he will now reprise the role in the adaptation of Lewis’s third book in the series, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

“There are some big pitched battles in this one, swords and action,” he reveals when pondering his forthcoming adventure, “although this film is more about magic, creatures and discovery. I am looking forward to seeing Caspian a few years later, as a king, playing a character that isn’t so vulnerable and fragile this time around. And playing a king, I think that has to be pretty cool. The king is in charge, for a start, although then the kids turn up and they kind of piss on his bonfire a bit!

“But I am looking forward to it. After all, as a kid you dream of wielding swords in a fantasy adventure.” He smiles.

“I definitely didn’t grow up wanting to play a young dad, with a child in a coma, searching for the answers!” The role of a young dad searching for the answers comes courtesy of the film he’s just completed in Boston, which carries the temporary title of Valediction. “It has a very adult theme and I am playing my own age for the first time ever,” says Barnes, “a 28-year-old man with a daughter. It felt like a lot of films that I have loved but also didn’t feel like anything I have read in a long time. It’s hard to describe. How would describe The Three Colours Blue or Blue Velvet or Momento? They are hard to pigeonhole. They are films about people. It is certainly the most real film I have done, it’s my second contemporary film, and it just kind of screamed at me to come and do it.”

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian and all the stories from the Chronicles of Narina are some of the most beloved children’s stories and the movies have recently become major motion pictures and blockbuster hits. The movies’ producer and Lewis’ step-son Douglas Gresham visited FOX 35 to talk about how Lewis has influenced his life, both through his writings and as an adopted member of Lewis family. He also mentions that he’s just come from the set of the Lone Islands from The Voyage of the Dawn Treader in Australia, and that he hopes to make all seven books into films.

NarniaHome.com is a brother site to NarniaFans.com, and in addition to hosting some featured stories, it will also host art submitted by others, including eventually video, sound, prose, poetry and animation. It will be home to some contests designed to let the Narnia community show what it can do.

NarniaHome.com has started out with an eye to be tech savvy. Already it has a group on Facebook (look for NarniaHome.com) and is beginning to explore other social networking technologies as it goes.

Come home to NarniaHome!

Gary Sweet, who plays Drinian in the film The Voyage of the Dawn Treader spent a few moments talking to Spencer Howson at the Radio United broadcast. I’ve taken the time to transcribe what was said in the interview, here.

Spencer: You’re also currently filming the next Narnia movie on the Gold Coast.

Gary Sweet: That’s right, yeah. I’m on the Gold Coast for another sixteen weeks now.

Spencer: Tell me what you’re doing in Narnia, then.

Gary Sweet: Ah, well, I don’t know if I can actually tell you that, cause I actually did sign a confidentiality agreement, but look, there’s a ship involved and of course somebody has to be in charge of that ship. Let’s just leave it at that.

Spencer: So anyone who’s read the book will know full-well what you’re saying.

Gary Sweet: Yeah, exactly.

Spencer: That’s a film that’s going to have huge international appeal as part of this series. That’s gotta be pretty exciting to be working on.

Gary Sweet: Yeah, it is. Yeah, it’s very exciting. One of the great pluses for me is the director, a guy called Michael Apted whose just a legendary British director. [...] Just the scope of this production, Spencer, is amazing. The digital stuff and the computer graphics and all that sort of stuff. It’s mind blowing. I missed all that, you know, I’m too old for that, plus I’m a technical moron. I’m not really good with all the technical side of things but geez they can do some amazing things now.

This week has been flying by. I just remembered that it was Thursday, and that I hadn’t written this week’s mailbag. So I’m spending lunch time writing this week’s installment. I spent Tuesday riding roller coasters at Cedar Point, and around that day there were some really huge things happening in the world of Narnia. The third film started shooting, and we’ve gotten some great photos of the Dawn Treader nearing completion. I’ve got a couple of e-mails to answer this week, but before I do, I just wanted to give a status update on the secret project. I’m currently working on speed issues on it, but it’s moving forward. I have guests up from Florida so it’s going to take me a little longer than I had initially anticipated, but I hope that it’s worth the wait.

And a quick update on Chesterton’s The Everlasting Man that just came in from a woman named Barbara: “C.S. Lewis’s appreciation for Chesterton’s The Everlasting Man in correspondence is well known. Tolkien borrowed the idea for Ents from Chesterton’s The Trees of Pride! I hope these facts were brought to your attention.” Thanks Barbara!

Q: Currently, the Chronicles of Narnia are being filmed in the order that corresponds to their publication order. However, Douglas Gresham has expressed interest in filming “The Magician’s Nephew” before “The Horse and His Boy“, instead of vice-versa. What is your opinion on this?

-Skulblaka_Shur’tugal

Paul: This is a great question! I am of the opinion that, when you first read the Chronicles, you always read them in the original publication order. As far as the filming goes, however, wherever they end up shooting The Horse and His Boy, it is the one story that doesn’t really seem to matter when they shoot it. It takes place during the reign of the Pevensie children in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. They could easily shoot it prior to The Magician’s Nephew, but shooting it after could afford them some story things that carry over, giving it more weight in the Narnia film series. This series is made up of books that all take place in the same world, but they are very different from one another in substance. The filmmakers are likely to, as we have seen, invent things that provide more continuity for the sake of the audience. If they did, in fact, shoot them in that order, it would give them an opportunity to introduce something in The Magician’s Nephew that has great weight in The Last Battle and, perhaps, have the Pevensie’s part in the story during The Horse and His Boy revolve around that particular thing, in some way. It would help to make that more of a trilogy, in some ways, and when the films would eventually be viewed in chronological order by super fans like us, we might notice some through lines to the overarching story of Narnia.

But who knows, this is all conjecture that I’m thinking about only seconds before I’m typing it. A stream of consciousness about Narnia filming, I suppose. It’s really quite intriguing to think about the possibilities.

Q: Hi! Somewhere I heard that The Call was nominated for an award. When will we find out if it won it – or do we already know??? Thanks.

-Dyanthius

Paul: I could not find information about this. Does anybody know if The Call by Regina Spektor was nominated for an award? I deserved to be. It was one of the best songs on the soundtrack, if not the best. If you know more information about this, please comment below!

Q: Hey, I was just wondering if you could give me a quick rundown or if you knew any links for a brief overview of what the Invisible Army is about? I’m doing extras work on it and I’d love to know what to expect in August.

-Dee

Paul: Wow, Dee! That’s fantastic that you’re doing some extras work on the film! It’s one of my dreams that you’re fulfilling. Best of luck to you on the film, and I hope that it goes well for you. If you would like to get a great look at what Invisible Army is all about, pick up the book The Voyage of the Dawn Treader or a copy of the audio book. I believe that the audio version is about 3 hours in length. The book itself is not that long and can be read fairly quickly. I will tell you, though: it’s an epic adventure on the high seas, with many locations and troubles along the way. I don’t want to say too much about it, though you can likely find plot synopses all over the web, and you can find chapter summaries here on NarniaFans.com if you look in the book section of the site.

And that’s it for this week’s mailbag! Be sure to send in your questions by using the contact form listed on the menu.
