Welcome to the mailbag, where we answer fanmail that you send in, over the course of the week. For those that don’t know, we’ll take your questions, and if we don’t know the answers, we’ll try to get the answers from people that would know. We might even make something up! I have a very broad sense of humor, on top of a vast knowledge of film, music and comics with a wide range in taste and a great memory that serves to bring great comparisons or answers to your questions.

This afternoon, I saw the latest Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. I have to say, having never read any of the books but the seventh, it connected the rest of the movies to the seventh book very well. However, I do have a question, which I posed on my facebook status today, getting a string of hilarious responses. If you’ve not seen the movie, avoid this paragraph:

“When Harry and Gandalf go to the Mines of Moria, why couldn’t Harry use the the Patronus on the Dead Marsh creatures, when Dumbledore was all Odysseus. Instead, he had to cast a Balrog to fight them, when the Balrog is made of light, just like the patronus.”

The point of this paragraph was two-fold. First, it was to point out just how much J.K. Rowling ‘borrowed’ from The Lord of the Rings and repackaged into her own work. However, she also borrowed from some Greek / Roman mythology having them cross over what I instantly thought was a representation of the river Styx, followed by a spell that replicated a scene in The Odyssey. It was set in the Mines of Moria from The Fellowship of the Ring, though, as well as in the Dead Marshes, where Frodo falls in among the dead and Gollum swims in after him in The Two Towers. And then, Dumbledore looks exactly like Gandalf when he’s fighting the Balrog on the Bridge of Khazad Dûm. And with the fire behind him, it looks like he’s summoned a Balrog to fight.

This brings us to the second part of the question: could Harry have used his Patronus on the Dead Marsh things? Arguably it is a light based magic, like fire, and does work on creatures of darkness other than just Dementors. I think that Harry just needs to be in trouble now, so the patronas has been limited.

Anyone have some insight for me other than “read the book?” I don’t plan on reading those books. Too many great books to read.

Let’s get started with this week’s mailbag:

Q: When I bought the Prince Caspian Soundtrack I was looking forward to hearing Reepicheep’s theme. Instead I only got a few seconds of it in The Door in the Air. Are they planning to come out with a more complete soundtrack?

-Collin Layman

Paul: Unfortunately a complete recording of Harry Gregson-Williams’ score for either The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe or Prince Caspian is very unlikely. Perhaps someday there will be a limited print run of a thousand or two copies of the complete recordings. Perhaps this letter will help to generate some more interest in owning all of the score from either film.

Who’s up for complete recordings of the Chronicles of Narnia scores by Harry Gregson-Williams? I sure am!

And this was a light week, with only the one letter. Better one than none, I say.

In the last few years, we’ve had a lot of lost manuscripts begin to surface from the likes of C.S. Lewis’ friend J.R.R. Tolkien. From The Children of Hurin to The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun, the wealth of literature from Tolkien has been expanded greatly, and it’s about time that something new from Lewis has been discovered. Communications Professor Steven Beebe of Texas State discovered a lost manuscript fragment in Oxford University’s Bodleian Library.

While there is no evidence that Tolkien ever started work on the project, the beginnings of a book that was to be a collaborative effort have been uncovered. According to a letter Tolkien wrote to his son Christopher in 1944, he had planned to write a book with Lewis called Language and Human Nature. The collaborative effort, with Lewis being the author of the Chronicles of Narnia and Tolkien being the author of The Lord of the Rings, would have been a joy to read, I am sure, regardless of the subject matter.

“What is exciting is that the manuscript includes some of Lewis’s best and most precise statements about the nature of language and meaning,” Beebe said. “Both Lewis and Tolkien wrote separately about language, communication, and meaning, but they published nothing collaboratively.”

Beebe found the fragment in a small notebook Lewis used. In the notebook were early fragments of The Magician’s Nephew and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, along with several unpublished thoughts and ideas. Beebe discovered the fragment after turning the notebook upside down and reading from back to front.

“I was so surprised to find Lewis writing about language and meaning, using examples and illustrations not found in any of his published work,” Beebe said. “I knew I had discovered something interesting. But at the time, I didn’t know I had found something important.”

Beebe determined it was the start of the lost book after several years of additional research into Tolkien and Lewis. In the manuscript, Lewis consistently refers to multiple authors instead of writing in the singular.

The Lewis estate must give its permission for the work to be published. However, Beebe is confident permission will be given and the manuscript will add new insight about Lewis’s ideas about the nature of language.

The article Beebe wrote documenting his discovery, “Language and Human Nature Manuscript Fragment Found: C. S. Lewis On Language and Meaning,” will be published next year in the journal Seven: An Anglo-American Literary Review. The journal publishes scholarship that focuses on the work of seven prominent Twentieth Century British authors, including both Lewis and Tolkien.

This is very exciting, and I look forward to reading it someday. I hope whatever it is, finds a way into publication. In particular: the Narnia snippets. It’d be really interesting to read those and see what changed.

In addition, the Professor teaches a class on Lewis:

Beebe teaches a course about Lewis and communication called “C. S. Lewis: Chronicles of a Master Communicator,” both on the Texas State campus in San Marcos and in a special class that will be taught this July and August at Oxford University. When teaching the class in Oxford rather than meeting in a in a classroom, most sessions are taught at various sites throughout Oxford, including Lewis’s home, the Kilns; Magdalan College, the college where Lewis taught; as well as the room in the Eastgate Hotel where Lewis first met his wife, Joy Davidman. Their love story was the subject of the movie Shadowlands, in which Anthony Hopkins played Lewis and Debra Winger portrayed Joy.

“My goal in teaching the course in Oxford,” said Beebe, “is to bring Lewis to life and have students discover Lewis’ approach to communication. Discovering Lewis’ unpublished ideas about language and human nature adds depth to our discussion of his approach to communication,” said Beebe. (San Marcos Mercury)

Mark Sommer located the press release from Texas State. Pardon the duplicate material:

What if two of the most famous and widely read 20th Century authors who have each individually sold millions of copies of their books had written a book together?

C. S. Lewis, author of the Narnia Chronicles and Screwtape Letters, and J. R. R. Tolkien, author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, had planned in the 1940s to write a book together about Language. According to a letter written by Tolkien in 1944 to his son Christopher, the collaborative book was to be called Language and Human Nature. A news release from their publisher announced that the book was scheduled for publication in 1950. It was, however, never published. Scholars have thought, until now, that it was never started.

Steven Beebe, Regents’ Professor and Chair of the Texas State Department of Communication Studies, discovered the opening pages of the unpublished manuscript in the Oxford University Bodleian Library and has recently documented that the manuscript was the beginning of the previously believed to be unwritten Lewis and Tolkien book.

Although C. S. Lewis started the book, there is no evidence that Tolkien began work on the project.

“What is exciting” said Beebe, “is that the manuscript includes some of Lewis’s best and most precise statements about the nature of language and meaning. Both Lewis and Tolkien wrote separately about language, communication, and meaning, but they published nothing collaboratively.”

The article Beebe wrote documenting his discovery, “Language and Human Nature Manuscript Fragment Found: C. S. Lewis On Language and Meaning,” will be published next year in the Journal Seven: An Anglo-American Literary Review. The journal Seven publishes scholarship that focuses on the work of seven prominent 20th Century British authors including both Lewis and Tolkien.

The partial book manuscript Beebe found was in a small notebook on which Lewis had written the word “Scraps.” Included in the tattered notebook are early fragments of two Narnia Chronicles, The Magician’s Nephew and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader along with unpublished ideas about a variety of topics.

Beebe discovered the book fragment by turning the little notebook upside down and reading from back to front.

“I was so surprised to find Lewis writing about language and meaning, using examples and illustrations not found in any of his published work,” said Beebe. “I knew I had discovered something interesting. But at the time, I didn’t know I had found something important.”

It was several years after finding the manuscript after doing additional research about Lewis and Tolkien that Beebe concluded that the manuscript was the beginning of the lost book.

In Lewis’s own distinctive handwriting the opening sentence clearly indicates that Lewis was writing a book about the nature and origins of language—the topic of the planned Lewis and Tolkien book. Further evidence that the manuscript is the beginning of the coauthored book project is the fact that Lewis wrote about “our statements” and used the phrase “authors consider,” rather than writing in the first person singular as Lewis often did. Because the newly discovered manuscript is copyrighted, it is not yet available for publication.Permission must be granted by the Lewis estate, and that process is in progress. When it is published, Beebe believes the manuscript will add new insights about Lewis’s ideas into the nature of language, with a special emphasis on the oral aspects of language, and about how meaning occurs when humans communicate.

This week’s mailbag features a topic that is very interesting to me: that of the relationship of J.R.R. Tolkien and his writing to C.S. Lewis and his. Other topics include what Anna Popplewell and William Moseley are up to next, and Andrew Adamson’s past in Papua New Guinea. I’ll see if I have the time to reach back into the mailbag archives after the five letters that I received this week. Be sure to look through the comments from last week’s mailbag for some fascinating follow-up information as well! Let’s get started!

Do you know what Anna Popplewell and William Moseley are up to these days? Are they working on any new films?

-jediash1

Paul: Both are in school right now. Anna Popplewell just ran a charity race, and has been attending Oxford, where she has not only acted in some plays, but she’s also directed! She’s not currently attached to any film projects.

William has auditioned for other roles and is rumored to be joining the film Ironclad where he would act along side Megan Fox, Robert Carlyle, Paul Giamatti, James Purefoy, Richard Attenborough, Bob Hoskins, Pete Postlethwaite and Angus Macfadyen among others. The film is set in the year 1215, the rebels of England forced the tyrannical King John to put his royal seal on the Magna Carta, but months later he broke the seal and assembled an army to take over the country again. In his way was the Rochester castle, a place that would become the symbol of the rebel’s struggle for justice and freedom.

THIS QUESTION CONTAINS SPOILERS FROM THE LAST BATTLE

If Fox gets a big hit with Voyage of the Dawn Treader and they continue to make the rest of the books, will they include Susan in The Last Battle even though C. S. Lewis does not? Will they keep her in for the sake of the audience?

-C.S. Layman

Paul: This is a question that is much like one that I was asked last week, to which my answer is practically the same. If they were to include Susan, which I would do were I to direct the film (hint hint!), it should only be on Earth, so that the audience has a good feel for why she’s not coming back. This is something that is taken care of only in a few lines of the book, but in movie form would require a little more to it.

THIS QUESTION CONTAINS SPOILERS FROM THE MAGICIAN’S NEPHEW

I would like to point out something about the question posed by Manasi Lad. In The Magician’s Nephew, Uncle Andrew accidentally drops some coins into the young Narnian soil which grow into two trees, one silver and one gold. Later on in the book, Aslan commands that these trees be chopped down and made into crowns for the first King and Queen of Narnia, Frank and Helen. That is why they are not in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. They had been chopped down hundreds of years ago.

-Maggie

Paul: Thank you, Maggie! This is something that I had forgotten, and I appreciate the help!

Is Ben Barnes returning as Prince Caspian in VDT since Prince Caspian is supposed to be older in the third movie?

-Walter Dodd

Paul: There are two answers to your question. The first answer is no, he will not be returning as Prince Caspian. However, he will be returning to the role of Caspian. This time as King. This is one reason why the cast an older actor. There wasn’t the need to establish a new actor in the role who is supposed to be only 3 years older.

Hi all, it’s been so long since I last sent in a query about 3 years ago, its been great to watch this site flourish. I’m so glad you brought the mailbag back. First of all i just wanted to say for anyone who didn’t know. On the Prince Caspian DVD with special features, on the menu there is a golden lion in the top left corner. Its easier watching on a computer but you can click on it to see some short film footage. When using the DVD remote you scroll down to the last topic and click left and it should highlight the lion. On the first menu it has a short movie made by Skandar showing ‘Blonde cam’, on the second menu its the Pevensie’s fighting over who actually saved Trumpkin, and the third is just a cameo of a stage worker. I just wanted to say this in case someone hadn’t noticed yet.

My real question is, on the DVD features (the first one I think) Andrew Adamson says that he lived in Papua New Guinea for his childhood years which helped inspire the new film’s message. I am currently in Papua New Guinea (16 years old)myself, at the International school and I was wondering about his history here? What school he went to? where he stayed? Hope its not to hard but i think it would be interesting to learn. Thanks, and don’t give up on the mailbag! it rocks.

-Jason Fotheringham

Paul: Thanks for writing in again, Jason! I remember your letters and am happy to have the mailbag back as well! As for Adamson, I recently learned of this myself, and had not known about it before either. I wish that I could answer this for you, but the simple fact is: I don’t know how to do that. Perhaps someone that knows can write in?

What is the current status report on production for Dawn Treader? I know we are in pre-production, but what are they actually doing right now? Also, when does filming begin?

-Jonathan Fletcher

Paul: Take a look at the news about the Gold Coast. It’s nearly completely secured, which means that set building will start happening shortly. They’ve been actively seeking out filming locations for some time now. They’re also in the middle of the screenplay re-write. Filming begins in late July.

Where did C.S. Lewis get his inspiration for all of ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’? Also, I thought I heard that C.S. Lewis encouraged J.R.R. Tolkien in continuing to write ‘The Lord of the Rings’. Do you know anything about this? Thanks a lot!

-Tarwe, the Narnian Elf

Paul: I wish I could tell you where Lewis got inspiration for all of the Narnia series, but I will tell you this. It started with a picture that was in his head of a lamp-post in the woods and a fawn next to it carrying parsels, and an umbrella.

He couldn’t get the image out of his head, and began writing. There are many many books that delve into Lewis’ inspiration for the series, and it’s far too many books to list here. If anyone has suggestions, feel free to comment the titles along with the author as well as a short synopsis, if possible, of what the book is about.

As far as The Lord of the Rings, yes: Lewis did encourage Tolkien to write the sequel to The Hobbit. They were contemporaries and friends, both teaching at Oxford and both part of a group called The Inklings. You can read about that group and the impact that each had on the other’s writings in a book called “The Company They Keep” by Diana Pavlac Glyer. It’s got the most complete listing of all of The Inklings that you’ll ever find in one place. This book is the culmination of 50 combined years of research and hard work. It is well worth your time.

I heard the writer, Diana Glyer, speak last year at LionCon, and boy did she ever have great insight into both Lewis and Tolkien. She even spoke about how Tolkien’s famous quote about his dislike of Narnia is blown way out of proportion, and it was based on only having read a few chapters of the first book in the series: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Tolkien was asked, as The Hobbit was a big hit, if he had a sequel to the story that could be released. He didn’t have one at the time, but people were encouraging him to continue the story. So Tolkien sat down to write it. At first it was a light and easy story, very similar in style to The Hobbit. But then the Wraith appeared in Hobbiton. And the rest is history.

Is there any Lewis / Tolkien Scholar that would like to either comment more on this, or even contribute an essay about this for the site? Feel free to e-mail us!

And with that, it’s late, and I apologize for not getting to more of the old e-mails this week. I’ll keep trying. We’ll get there!

In recent years, there have been two different fantasy series that share similarities. They have the same basic plots, the same basic creatures, and so on. Looking at the posters, cases, and trailers, you would think they were very alike, but when you look deeper, you see that they are very different indeed. This fact shows itself through the success of the books and films of their names.

“The Chronicles of Narnia” have been a beloved series for families everywhere since the 1950’s. They started out as a single novel which gained so much popularity that it soon gave birth to a series of seven imaginative tales.

The “His Dark Materials” series have been among us since 1995 and have gained various awards and praise. The first novel, Northern Lights, which was later released in America as The Golden Compass was published in 1995. It was followed by The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass which completed the trilogy.

The first book in each series, and the second in The Chronicles of Narnia, have been recently adapted into major motion pictures. There are similarities, as was stated earlier, but there are also differences. These differences have been debated and quarreled over for years, and here are some of the reasons why:

First, we will look at the authors of the novels. “The Chronicles of Narnia” were written by a man born on November 29, 1898. He lived in Belfast, Ireland and later taught in Oxford for nearly thirty years. C. S. Lewis struggled greatly in childhood and onward, these struggles pushing him to atheism. Later in his life, however, Lewis’ friend and fellow writer J. R. R. Tolkien, author of the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, witnessed to him and Lewis converted to Christianity in 1931. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, published in 1950, was the first children’s book Lewis ever wrote. Being a devoted Christian, Lewis paralleled his fantastical world with stories and teachings from the Bible.

The author of “His Dark Materials” comes from a completely different viewpoint. Philip Pullman was born on October 19, 1946 in Norwich, England, frequently moving from base to base due to his father’s career with the Royal Air Force. The first book in Pullman’s series was published in 1995 and was followed by two sequels. Pullman is currently writing another book in the “His Dark Materials” series which will be called The Book of Dust. Pullman says that he has received many questions about his portrayals on religion in his previous novels and will further explain the extent of his atheist beliefs in what he says will be a very large novel:

“This is a big subject and I’m writing a big, big book…”

Unlike Lewis, Pullman sewed bits of atheistic teachings into his worlds and creatures with the intent of steering children away from Christianity. Some could say that Lewis had God on his side, for “The Chronicles of Narnia” has boomed with success whereas The Golden Compass is the only novel in Pullman’s series to be adapted to film.

The Golden Compass crashed at the box-office, even though it cost the same to make as The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. After being asked his opinion on why this was, C. E. Moore says:

“It just so happened that when they finally hit screens one was good and one made people want their money back (with the exception of the kick-butt polar bear jaw-breaking scene). Another possibility is that the Narnia films are based on a series of books written by an Oxford don and those books continue to be loved and cherished by millions the world over years after Lewis’ death while The Golden Compass is written by a man who has a special place in his heart for attacking the deeply held Christian beliefs of individuals through children’s stories that are not equally loved nor as well-written. What do you think?”

After the unsuccessful release of The Golden Compass, New Line announced that they would not be releasing any sequels to the film. Many people have their opinions on why Narnia is more of a success, but with Lewis’ wonderful characters and his devotion to God and Pullman’s statement: “My books are about killing God”, I would ask you the same question Mr. Moore did:

What do you think?

The place to go for news on The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, for the last 10 years has been none other than TheOneRing.net! We’d like to congratulate them on 10 great years, and look forward to the next 10 years as well! I’ve been a big fan of the website for many years, and they’ve provided inspiration for me with this site as well. This is not to mention the fact that they have allowed me to use their movie review engine for the Narnia Fan Reviews!

With The Hobbit films coming out in a few years, there’s a lot to look forward to! And we wouldn’t have it any other way!

Another successful April Fools Day comes and goes. I couldn’t have asked for a better response than the one that was given by the amount of press that we received from our three major April Fools Day jokes this year.

For our wrap up this year, Jonathon and I are collaborating on this story. We’re both weighing in on the response to the stories that I can take no credit for. Jonathon is a genius, and he is THE genius behind the April Fool’s Day jokes this year and last.

Reading the comments on the stories is really fun, as people express thoughts of dread, the idea that it might well be an elaborate ruse, and more gems of incredible emotion.

By far, my most favorite mention, however, is on the blog of a movie magazine that I never expected to get a mention in:

Cinefantastique! It even made the front page!

Thank you, Steve Biodrowski, your write up made it all worth it.

Jeffrey Overstreet called our Twilight story his “Favorite April Fool joke of the day so far” via Twitter, and goes on to call it “wonderfully painful” on his blog.

These stories spread around the Twitter world very quickly, and brought in a huge spike in traffic, more than doubling our usual visitor traffic, and we had a great time with them.

As a round up:

Twilight scribe Stephenie Meyer is not writing The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. ( or The Hobbit.)

Cast members from The Princess Bride are (sadly) not really in the cast (yet?) And for that matter, neither are Andy Serkis or any Muppet performers ( past and present) as voices of the Dufflepods.

Mel Gibson and Kirk Cameron have not signed to an Untitled Inklings Movie, nor have any of the other actors.

Jonathon’s response:

Most of my thoughts are the same as Paul’s. As Paul said, I was the man behind all of these jokes both this year and last year. It has often been told to aspiring authors to “write what you would want to read.” In this case, I went with jokes I’d be inclined to believe as well. Clearly, that has been achieved.

Seeing all the press we got for this was amazing. (I’m wondering if this will make Wikipedia.) It is just as much fun to read some of the responses to the jokes as it was to actually come up with them. At some responses I’d laugh, and at other’s I’d muse to myself, “why so serious?”

All of you loyal NarniaFans readers have been great sports as usual, and I thank you for endulging in our tomfoolery.

Two of the biggest Christian actors are slated to star in a film about two of the 20th century’s most prominent Christian writers. Actors Kirk Cameron (Growing Pains, Left Behind, and Fireproof), and Mel Gibson (Lethal Weapon, Braveheart and The Passion of the Christ) are slated to star as C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien in an upcoming still untitled movie.

Mel Gibson as J.R.R. Tolkien

Other names attached to this film are Reese Witherspoon as Edith Tolkien, and Kirk Cameron’s real life wife, Chelsea Noble, as Joy Davidman. Ironically, two actors who have already portrayed characters created by both men will also have major roles in the film. Sean Astin ( Samwise Gamgee in Lord of the Rings) will play fellow Inkling Charles Williams, and Ray Winstone (the voice of Mr. Beaver in LWW) will play Major Warren “Warnie” Lewis. The film is slated to begin filming sometime this December in Canada.

Kirk Cameron as C.S. Lewis

“Cameron and Gibson are perfect for these roles,” says one insider. “Cameron was an Agnostic who came to Christ and has become an outspoken defender of the faith much like Lewis was, and Gibson is a devout Roman Catholic like Tolkien was.”

There is some concern about how convincing most of the cast will be at playing roles, especially when Ray Winstone is the only actor who comes close to being from the same country as the person he is portraying.

“Well, Gibson wasn’t Scottish, but he made a fine William Wallace in Braveheart,” says another insider. “We can only imagine he will make a fine Tolkien too. The same goes for Reese Witherspoon. She did a great job as June Carter Cash in Walk the Line, it only stands to reason she’ll do another amazing job as Edith Tolkien. I am sure moviegoers will be pleasantly surprised.”

“I smell Oscar gold!” says one studio exec. “This film will have everything!”

Fans can be assured that Gibson will not be uttering “You can take away my life, but you cannot take away my Hobbits” at any time in the film. The film will not be a parody of the lives of the actors or the people they are playing, but plans to be a respectful, thoughtful and well done dramatic bio-pic about the lives of these two men and the friendship they shared.

“There will be some changes of course,” said one insider. “For example many Christians may be offended by the fact these men smoked and drank. We plan to omit that and instead have them sharing milk shakes and Oreo Cookies at the Eagle and Child. We will also minimize the fact that Joy Davidman was a divorcee. We won’t even mention what happened to her former husband, kind of like Mike and Carol’s first spouses on the Brady Bunch. After Fireproof, the last thing people want is to see a key Christian thinker, played by a major Christian actor, marrying a divorcee.”

Nothing else is known about the film at this time. However, there are some rumblings that a major name is attached to write it as well as direct it. Cloud Ten Pictures, the studio behind the Left Behind films, will help produce the film and insure a theological message.

Stay tuned to NarniaFans for more news on this exciting film!

Those who accuse these writers of escapism tend to overlook the fact that such a curriculum vitae would make it virtually impossible for them to remain ignorant of, and not to at least in some way reflect in their own writing, the events that changed the world and the literature in the first half of the twentieth century. This paper aims to offer a new approach to the place of The Chronicles of Narnia and The Lord of the Rings in this common context, and also to discuss how these works differ from each other with reference to the way in which they combine Christian and pagan elements.
