NarniaFans has just learned that Aslan voice actor Liam Neeson has decided to apply for US citizenship. In an interview with Diane Sawyer on ABC’s Good Morning America he said that he has lived in America for twenty years and that the country has been good to him. He cites the outpooring of support from fans following the death of his wife Natasha Richardson a few monthes ago, as his main reason for coming to this decision.

Neeson said in the interview, “I’m still a proud Irishman, of course, but I’ve become an American citizen. I’m very, very proud of that.”

News sources say that this was the first interview that Neeson conducted since his wife’s passing.

From the American NarniaFans, Congraulations, Mr. Neeson! Welcome to America.

I’ve just learned that Ben Barnes was on a short list of four people to play the role of Edward Cullen in the Twilight Saga. I’m pretty sure that it came down to scheduling conflicts with the Narnia series, as the reason he didn’t. However, when it comes to casting for the films, it seems that he studio is all about the cash the films bring in, and will recast if there is any clash in schedules, as Bryce Dallas Howard is replacing someone in the third film (shooting prior to the release of the second).

The four actors up for the role were revealed at the TwiTour, by way of Twilight Lexicon:

Catherine Hardwicke said that the 4 finalists (who she called bachelor 1, 2, 3, 4) for the part of Edward Cullen were [Robert Pattinson], Jackson Rathbone, Ben Barnes, and Shiloh Fernandez. She said to watch for Shiloh because she predicts that he’s going places.

I’m no fan of Twilight. Never seen it, nor read it. I have heard some mixed things about it, and I’ve heard that if you summarize what happens to the girl in the story, it really sounds like she’s not only stalked, but being watched by a definition creeper, and loses most of her friends over it, and even after she’s married to one of them, she has feelings for another. Seriously? In my world, when you’re married, you don’t harbor those types of feelings, or entertain thoughts of it. Needless to say, I don’t understand the fascination with wanting someone watch you sleep all night (based on a line in the movie trailer). Can anyone defend it? Are my friends, who have read it, off base in their summaries?

Ben Barnes, who is currently preparing to return to the role of Caspian for The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, has been active in the film world since then. While Bigga than Ben filmed prior to Prince Caspian, it released after, in the cinemas in the UK, and now it has been released onto DVD there as well. It’s producer, Liz Holford, tells me that they are working on a deal to release the film in the United States, and I will be sure to update you when that deal occurs. We’ve also got the first poster for Ben’s next film, Dorian Gray. Take a look!

According to Amazon.co.uk, the film has a certificate rating of 15.

But it s not too long before Spiker (Ben Barnes) and Cobakka (Andrei Chadov) realise that legally they are not going to get very far. So aided by the dodgy Artash they learn to shoplift, rip off banks, joyride ride on the tube and turn mobile phones in to crack. Finding themselves drawn into the shadowy underworld life begins to turn sour and the highs begin to fade. When Spiker begins to fall prey to the easy drugs Cobakka is forced to making some life-changing decisions. Special Features: Making of Bigga Than Ben

It’s stories like this that really show just how cool the actors are, from the Chronicles of Narnia. William Moseley is a true class act. I was witness to him speaking to one of the less fortunate folks on a street in New York. It really was a great display of his character as a person. This is just another example as Chronicles of Narnia star William Moseley backed a series of pioneering children’s workshops.

William, from Sheepscombe, who plays Peter Pevensie, sent a personal message to inspire and support six Tewkesbury School pupils on a Performing For Success pilot project.

The Gloucestershire County Council-backed scheme aims to motivate and help primary and secondary children by using drama, animation, team games and other activities to build their confidence, self-esteem, teamwork, speaking and listening skills and problem-solving.

The six-week, after-school course, run once a week at Tewkesbury Library, was supported by The Roses theatre, who ran two sessions based on anti-bullying and raising self-esteem, and animators Cordial AV, who helped youngsters create a selection of animations.

Organiser Emma Taylor said: “William was very enthusiastic because he struggled academically and was inspired by drama.

Ben Barnes is a very down to earth guy, and provides a really good example of what he went through on the promotional tour for Prince Caspian. He mentions New York, where I saw him about four out of the seven days that I was there, and sometimes twice in one day, so I can attest to what he says about his experience there.

It can be hard work being a Hollywood hero. Just ask Ben Barnes, a.k.a. Prince Caspian, star of the billion-dollar-grossing Chronicles of Narnia franchise.

There’s the grinding tour of world premieres (”Travelling for three months, sitting on your own in a hotel room in Taiwan, thinking, ‘what am I doing here?’ Just weird.”) and the red-carpet appearances where your every move is greeted by an electric storm of flashbulbs (”I don’t think there’s any way of ever being comfortable with it. You put on a perma-grin, which is so unnatural, and the lights make you squint. I get very anxious.”). There’s the frankly disconcerting experience of seeing your very own toy action figurine for the first time. “My own was absolutely awful, shamefully bad. I was a bit upset by that. How many times do you get an action figure made of you? Mine looked like a cross between Adrien Brody and Javier Bardem – but ill.” There’s the tireless and tiresome conveyor belt of press junkets and interviews.

“They take as much out of you as filming does”, sniffs Barnes. “I thought, ‘it’s only chatting, how hard can it be?’” As it turned out, the New York round of Prince Caspian promotion very nearly wiped this swashbuckling regent out: he did 90 interviews in one day, woke up the next with no voice and found he had to do 70 more, dosed up on a cocktail of vitamin C, honey and lemon, and Chinese potions. “I didn’t really have a choice. The film was called Prince Caspian, there was no hiding.” Appearing on Jay Leno’s sofa was a rare highlight. “Have you seen it? It’s definitely the best interview I’ve done…”

[...]

Today, arriving at his agent’s office and blaming his late arrival on the Piccadilly line, Barnes doesn’t really look like a star. Tall and slim and dressed in a white T-shirt, leather jacket, jeans and biker boots, he’s sporting some patchy stubble and “ridiculous” long hair in preparation for the [Chronicles of Narnia]: Voyage of the Dawn Treader shoot in July (”I do not want extensions again.”).

[...]

It has not always been an easy ride; Barnes already has one dispute under his belt, when he left The History Boys six months into its West End run to play Caspian, annoying the National Theatre. “I’m still hugely regretful about it and I still haven’t heard a peep out of them. I didn’t feel like I was leaving anyone in the lurch but I did feel like I was letting people down. And I felt like I was going to vomit for three and a half weeks between getting Prince Caspian and leaving. It was always my dream to work at the National: I’d been going there with my Dad since I was 10. I’d love to round it off one day by going back. It’s still the most gratifying job I’ve ever done.”

Prince Caspian, he implies, was not quite so gratifying. “It’s more to do with the contrast between the marketing and what I was asked to do. I was trying to do this awkward character who wasn’t sure he wanted the responsibility of being a leader. I don’t think that tested so well, so they tried to tweak him into a hero.” Did they Hollywood-ise him? “Just a little. Yeah. Which is completely fair and it made a lot of money so they know what they’re doing. But at the same time, as you can see by all my other choices, it’s not particularly what I’m going for. I want to play characters that are interesting to watch.”

-via The Independent

Sorry that this week’s mailbag is a day late. I had some business to attend to. Namely, there were ghosts to be busted, and I was the best Ghostbuster for the job. On Tuesday, a game that I had been waiting for most of my life to play was finally released. Not only that, but it was released in roughly three variations, two of which I know for sure used the actors from the original movies. Ghostbusters The Video Game was released for most systems, of which I got it for Xbox 360 and Wii as well as DS. I have beaten the game on the 360, and just started playing the Wii version, which is a very different experience from the 360 version so far. And I’ve loved almost every minute of it, save for some small problems, and the difficulty level of the game when sometimes, even on easy. When I was 8 or 9, I went to the arcade (!) to play the Ghostbusters game, only to be disappointed by it for not having a similar style of play to that of the movie, and it’s about time they’ve made the game that I dreamed up at such a young age. But this isn’t what you’re here to read about, you want to hear answer to Narnia fan mail, so here we go.

Q: Why was the second trailer for “Prince Caspian” released only 2-3 weeks before the film hit theaters? If I remember correctly, the second trailer for LWW was out two months in advance of the film, and we got the nine-minute super trailer not long after.

That’s the end of my question. I hope they do a better job of trailers on VDT. I saw “Baby Mama” a week before “Prince Caspian” last year, and the theater was still using the teaser trailer. I never got to see trailer #2 on the big screen!

-Mike

Paul: That was part of the mis-calculation of the promoters of the film. They did a big event for the first Caspian trailer, which we were a part of, and then the second one was next to nothing. It seemed like they had, perhaps, decided to cut bait. But perhaps it really took them that long to get the second trailer ready.

One other theory that I have is the movies released early in the year don’t tend to pull in a lot of people, and they were waiting to launch it with the movies that would have the greatest possible impact. They could have, for instance, attached the trailer to Iron Man a couple of week’s prior to the release of the film, at that point.

Either way, however, I have no idea why they did things the way they did with film two. Perhaps they didn’t feel it’d have as big an impact as the first film, and that contributed to the level of effort used in the marketing.

Anyone else have some theories on this to contribute?

Q: Hi! I, like most Narnia fans, am really looking forward to “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader“. As most fans know, the filming has been set back several months, but is currently set for late July. If this schedule is kept, have you any idea when we can expect the official trailer? For “Prince Caspian“, it was about ten months. Is this standard for movies?

-Reepicheep, Knight of Narnia

Paul: With movies, there really is no standard for a trailer. The first teaser for The Last Airbender is attached to Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen this month, and the movie is scheduled for July 2, 2010. It seems that one year tends to be typical of bigger movies, while 3-6 months for smaller films. With Prince Caspian, the first trailer was released in the December prior to the release of the film, roughly six months. I believe what you were talking about is the set videos. We’re not sure, really, when we’ll start to see trailers for the film, but I’d expect that they will want to start creating awareness in December of this year. So I’d expect to see something this year, with a ramp up happening throughout 2010.

Q: Hi, Paul! This is a two-part question. In ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe‘ did William, Anna, Skandar, and Georgie have stunt or size doubles? How much of the movie do you think that these four actually did? As for the second part, it’s basically the same question only for ‘Prince Caspian‘: did the four ‘Pevensies’ and Ben have doubles? I know that William did most of his own stuff. Thanks a lot.

-Tarwe, the Narnian Elf

Paul: In both movies, as is typical of big films with action sequences, they all had stunt doubles. Not really size doubles, as that only tends to apply with movies that include things such as Hobbits, as far as I know. Sure, they’d do as much as they could, but for insurance purposes, there are big reasons for having the stunt doubles. If anything should happen, they save hundreds of millions in re-shoots and re-casting. I can’t really say percentages, as I wasn’t on set for the shoot, but I do know that they all wanted to do their own stunts from time to time, and they all got their chance, something that I’m really happy about, for them.

And that’s it for this week’s mailbag. That was short, but with good reason. My sister has Thyroid Cancer, and needs prayers that her surgery goes well, and I have a friend, who is pregnant, has to get her apendix out, and something might be wrong with her liver, too. So, that being said, keep sending the e-mails and commenting.

As for the secret project, I suppose I’ll give one more clue, but asking a question like “what is the secret project?” is a cleaver approach that will get you nowhere. Anyway, the secret project is web-based.

I apologize for being late with this week’s mailbag. Wednesday was the season finale of Lost and then Thursday was the season finale of The Office. It was a very busy week besides all of that as well. Anyway, let’s get started.

Q: I heard that Georgie Henley wrote 2 books while LWW was being made. Where can I get them? Also, where can I get Anna Popplewell’s book?

-Queen~of~Narnia

Paul: Good question. Neither book has officially been published, though Jonathan Fletcher answered about Susan in Mailbag #32. I’m not sure if they ever will be published, though. We’ll see.. if demand is high, it’s possible.

Jonathan Fletcher: Part of Anna’s Journal from LWW was published in the illustrated movie companion. It wasn’t the full thing but it was a small part.

Q: Having tried to keep up with the news about the production of the “Narnia” films, I’ve read that the plan is to make all seven books into films. I’ve also read that “Prince Caspian” is the last movie William and Anna plan to be in. However, Susan is in “The Horse and His Boy” and Peter is in “The Last Battle”. Do you know if the movie makers plan on trying to get William and Anna back for these two films, or if they will get someone else to play Peter and Susan? Thanks a lot!

-Reepicheep, Knight of Narnia

Paul: Anna and William have signed contracts only for the films they were in, so far. I believe that’s what they are talking about, as they don’t want to assume that, no matter when the films are shot, they get the parts. At this point, the filming of those movies is a major unknown. In a perfect world, they’d all be a sure thing. But so far, each sequel has hinged on how well the last had done. However, it seems that this series has a lot of studio support, as, if done well, they could all be big movies themselves.

Now, in an effort to lengthen this mailbag some, because we only got a couple of letters this week, I’m going to go back and answer another archival e-mail that I received. This one is especially timely, as you’ll see:

Q: Hi,
I really enjoy your site! I have a couple of questions on the production of “Prince Caspian”:
1. If post-production ends at the end of this year, when can we expect the first trailer?
2. When will they release actual promotional photos of the cast?
3. Are they going to have Ben Barnes alias Caspian in a lot of action scenes, and is he doing his own stunts?
4. Why are they releasing “Prince Caspian” not earlier next year?
Thank you!

-Isabell

Paul: Thanks, Isabell… I’m more than happy to answer these questions, now, a year after the release of Prince Caspian.
1. The first trailer hit in December 2007!
2. Promotional Photos hit around the same time as the first trailer.
3. Yes and No. Caspian appeared in a lot of action sequences, as we know… but there were some stunt double sequences in the film.
4. This question is the reason I kept this letter. The reason that they wouldn’t have released the film earlier, is because they only finished the final shots in the film about 3 weeks prior to release. Special effects and editing take a long time, and they don’t want to rush it out the door. It would have been sloppy and slapped together.

Alright, that’s it for this week. Sorry it’s so short this time… I’m short on time as it is. Hopefully I’ll be back next Thursday with a mailbag to make up for this one.

As many fans know, Ben Barnes claimed during auditions for Prince Caspian that he could ride a horse. It turned out to be a stretch of the truth as he had only been on a horse once when he was very small. So they trained him in horseback riding.

While filming Easy Virtue, the last part of shooting involved a big and expensive fox hunt on horseback. The director, Stephan Elliot comments:

“Ben really wanted to ride in the hunt scene, which was the last thing we shot, but the insurance company wouldn’t let him. It was such a shame because he’d learned to ride for Prince Caspian and he knew he was good on a horse. I put all the money we had left into this hunt and it looked great, so I just said, ‘Ben, get on the horse.’ He was thrilled… The producers found out too late and I could see them rushing to the set, where they’d attempt to pull him off the horse. I yelled, ‘Action,’ the hunt took off and Ben rode his horse straight into a tree, was thrown off and knocked himself out. He was fine but for a minute there, I was really concerned… but I thought, ‘Well I’ve got what I need and they can’t take the film away from me.’ The insurance company guys were not happy.”

Ben Barnes is currently preparing for his return to Narnia in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader; shooting starts this July in Australia.

For this week’s Mailbag, I looked in my inbox and realized a couple of things: first, there was only one e-mail for this week’s mailbag. I could take this to mean that it’s not a good feature to bring back, but that would be ridiculous. I enjoy the chance to answer e-mails and also to put my own voice into the site just a little bit.

On a related note, I share Andrew Adamson’s birthday. Who knew? Andrew, if you’re reading this, that must be the reason we have similar creative minds.

Anyway, let’s get to it.

Q: Is there more VDT concept art than meets the eye during the “Pre-visualizing Prince Caspian” DVD feature? Look to the upper left at the 2:20 mark. Is that red creature a dragon of some kind? It has a similar shape to whatever is shown flying over water at around the 9:58 mark. (This image appears again at 9:18 and 9:31.) Also, look to the right at 9:31. These images do not look familiar from PC and the colors are very different; could they be from VDT?

Mike

Paul: This question really speaks to me for more reasons than just being directed toward me. And I think he knows what I’m talking about. More than Meets the Eye. Transformers. Yes, I am a child of the 80s, and Transformers was a shot that I rarely missed.

Anyway, yes, that art is from the concept art for The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. However, the thing about concept art that we have to remember is that not all of it makes it beyond the concept art stage. One case that speaks to this is the Star Wars prequels. I can’t tell you how much concept art I’ve seen that never made the cut. Perhaps the most famous bit of concept art for a Star Wars film was painted by Ralph McQuarrie.

As he describes it: Luke is fighting Darth Vader in what was to have been a scuffle aboard the Rebel Blockade Runner soon after Vader’s Imerial captured the Rebel ship. Luke is wearing a king of breathing mask because Vader’s troopers apparently cut through a panel to get in, allowing the air supply to escape.

The Darth Vader costume – a grotesque breath mask and all sorts of other lifesupporting systems, computer readout, black cape and armor – was partly inspired by the impressive image of a Samurai warrior. George Lucas, in keeping with the idea that Vader’s whole being was to be mysterious, wanted the character to be entirely in black.

Now that the Voyage of the Dawn Treader is back in the early stages of Pre-production, new art will most likely be created to match new portions of the screenplay, while some art will be dropped from the slate as cuts are made. While the prospect is great that the artwork seen might be a glimpse at what we’ll see in the future, and it is likely… it’s not something that I would work myself up about too much.

Now, let’s get going with the old letters. These letters are at least 2 years old, and at most 1 year old.

Q: I heard that Anna wrote a book about being on the set of LWW or something like that, where can I find this book? I’d really like to know. Thanks!

-Ben Burton

Paul: I believe you’re referring to the journal she kept while on the set of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. It was published after the film’s release, but I don’t know if it has ever been released publicly. If anyone knows more about this, please contact us!

Q: Why did they decide to skip ‘The Horse and His Boy’and are they ever going to film it?

-Smith

Paul: This is a question that I used to get every day or so when Prince Caspian began filming. Prior to that, you could have replaced The Horse and His Boy with The Magician’s Nephew. The answer to this question is the same as the answer to that one. They haven’t really skipped anything. If you look at the original publication dates of the books, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Prince Caspian were the first two books in the series. Prince Caspian also carries the sub-title The Return to Narnia.

Are they going to film it, though? There are a number of things that need to happen. First, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader has to be a mega-hit for 20th Century Fox. Second, The Silver Chair has to also do very well. If those films to well, then we can almost certainly count on the rest of the series being filmed. Third, a script will have to be written that takes creative liberties with the characters based on some of the problems that it poses, with the portrayal of different cultures. It simply may not fly, as written.

Q: I was just wondering what you guys were going to do when the main characters like Peter and Susan get to old to play their part. Are you guys to get other people to play their parts? If you did that would be horrible.

-Softballgirl

Paul: The cool thing about the Narnia books is the cycle of characters. There shouldn’t be a time when an actor is too old to return to the role he or she originated, if or when the time arrises that they need to reprise that role. If you read the entire series, you’ll understand what I’m talking about. I’ll leave it at that.

Q: *spoilers* So, if not all of the original four siblings are in all the books, do you think the films will include them (such as Peter and Susan in VDT) in the films to please fans??? This would be awesome!!! But I’m just curious as to how they will handle this.

-Marie

Paul: This is a great question, and one that many are still wondering about today! When it comes down to it, movies have a way of changing things to include cameos. These appearances are fun for movie fans, and can be used to serve a few purposes. First, it can establish why a character isn’t a major part of the story, such as Peter leaving for the Professor’s, or Susan leaving for America. Second, it can also give fans a little treat. Third, in a series such as this, it gives the actors a chance to reconnect with the cast that they’ve come to know as a surrogate family.

Personally, I would count on seeing both Peter and Susan for even a brief moment, though they aren’t going to tell us anything about that, and most of us will have to wait until the film’s release on December 10, 2010!

Q: What order are the books being made into movies?

-Nikki

Paul: It appears they’re doing it in the original publication order of the books. If they can complete it, The Last Battle will be EPIC!

Q: Why did it take you so long to start filming the second movie, Prince Caspian; but work is already started on the third, Voyage of the Dawn Treader?

-Togciadc64

Paul: This question was posed on June 2, 2007. At that time, Disney expected Prince Caspian to do at least as well as LWW. As we all know, now, it didn’t. We Narnia fans could have told them that. Prince Caspian isn’t a very well known, or even very popular, Narnia book. They decided to start early on Dawn Treader, because they planned on created what was then called The Caspian Trilogy. It would be composed of the three films that comprised Caspian’s story. But why did it take so long after LWW? Because they were waiting to get the Box Office receipts for it. They wanted to be sure it was successful.

Q: According to the book “The Magician’s Nephew” two trees – a gold and silver tree – were planted by Andrew Kirke near the lamp-post. But in the movie, when Lucy arrives on the first night, and also after many years before returning to England, they pass the lamp-post but the gold and silver trees are not seen. Why is it so?

-Manasi Lad

Paul: There are a few possibilities. First, it had been many many years since the planting, so the landscape might have changed by then. Second, they weren’t mentioned in the book, which may have been a result of Lewis having not planned on writing seven books. Third, the book doesn’t actually specify how close the trees are to the lamp-post.

Q: In “Evacuating London” from the LWW soundtrack there is someone singing in some parts of the song. I can’t distinguish the lyrics… do you know what they are or where I can find them?? Thanks!! Love the site as always

-Marie (same one as a few letters above)

Paul: I had the same question, so I went straight to the source, Lisbeth Scott herself! She responded with the lyrics, which you can find here: Evacuating London.

That’s all of the letters I had time for this week. Stay tuned next week, as I dive into the archives again for more of the letters from 2007, as well as more letters from all of you, over the course of the week!
