Title: God in the Dock

Author: CS Lewis

Publisher: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company (October 1994)

ISBN-10: 0802808689

ISBN-13: 978-0802808684

Summary:

God in the Dock: Essays on Theology and Ethics, is a collection of essays written by CS Lewis over the course of his life that examine a wide range of issues, ranging from the ethical issue of vivisection, to the importance of mythology, to the celebration of Christmas, to the reading of old books, to the still divisive issue of women as clergy.

Review

God in the Dock is another discussion worthy collection of essays penned by CS Lewis. Much like Christian reflections, God in the Dock, and Of Other Worlds, was published posthumously by the Lewis Estates, collecting several of his essays that he wrote through out his life-time.

This book’s title comes from the eponymous essay, “God in the Dock”. The term comes from the courtroom usage of a trail. The Bench is where the judge sits, while the witness or person accused sits in the dock. In the essay, Lewis argues that in our day in age, we find ourselves examining God in the same way, wondering how a God who is good, and wonderful, and loving and merciful and compassionate can allow things like war , famine, disease, and poverty to exist.

It is certainly question that bears asking and that is the very same subject that many of these essays tackle. From essays on pain, to prayer, to the deity of Christ, to the incarnation, Lewis not only examines God and Christianity and touch ethical issues like vivisection. This book also features and essay looking at the issue of Priestesses in the church, written back in 1948, an issue that still remains a hot-button item in many churches as they debate the role of women in the church.

Well some of the essays aren’t’ nearly s divisive, there are three that deal with the subject of Christmas and commercialism, and one on the importance of reading of old books, they all offer some food for thought. A few of the essays are even written in a dialogue style similar to the works of Aristotle and Plato where a “teacher” is having a discussion with a “student”. Another satirical essay, “Xmas and Christmas” is written like a lost chapter from a book by the historian Herodotus on the celebration of Christmas in England and brilliantly shows the juxtaposition or the “commercial” holiday versus the “true” holiday.

Two other unique essays in this book are the “short bits” which is a collection of essays Lewis started but never completed, and a reprint of a discussion Sherwood E. Wirt of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, that looks at the claims of Christ, the importance of coming to him, space travel, and the then emerging Evangelical movement in America. The Discussion with Mr. Wirt also briefly highlights a meeting between CS Lewis and the Reverend Billy Graham and Lewis’s impressions of him.

Their certainly are some areas of controversy with this book. Perhaps the most controversial is that he also argues that mythology can help provide a good starting point for those who do not know Christ in his essay “The Grand Myth” as the myths contain many symbols that can point to Christ. Also he warns in his essay, “ The Dangers of National Repentance” that national repentance may actually be dangerous, as individuals may neglect to repent of their own personal sins and focus only on the much larger societal ills. In his essay on women clergy he also speaks out against the issue of having them serve in such a position. These areas of controversy are certainly helpful s it can get us honestly talking about such things.

While to some there is certainly plenty of material in this book that is covered in some of Lewis’s other works, these essays are merely the framework for them. By reading this we get a much fuller picture of some of Lewis’ ideas. Once again, Lewis perfectly demonstrates in God in the Dock just why it is he is the undisputed “arm-chair theologian” of the 20th century. His words in these essays are clear, concise, and still thought provoking and just as relevant today as they were when he first wrote them.

I’m back from vacation to bring you more great Narnia news than you can possibly dream of. I can’t give specifics of my vacation, but I can say that I did visit Middle-earth while I was in New Zealand, and that I saw wonderful, weird and marvelous creatures while I was away. Onto the news: The C.S. Lewis Festival returns for its seventh year, expanding its offerings into early October.

Stretching from Oct. 1 through Nov. 23, the festival explores the famed author’s works and life.

Festival executive director Anne McDevitt said one of the biggest highlights of the festival will be a visit from Walter Hooper of Oxford, England.

“In the world of C.S. Lewis, there is no one more respected than Walter Hooper. He served as estate advisor and also as the editor of the works of C.S. Lewis, and he’s credited with keeping (Lewis’) books enormously popular. He also was a close personal friend of Lewis, so it’s rare that we get to encounter people who actually knew Lewis,” McDevitt said.

Scheduled events are as follows:

— “The Four Loves” by C.S. Lewis book discussions are at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, and Thursday, Oct. 8, at McLean & Eakin, Booksellers, in Petoskey, and 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, at Charlevoix Public Library in Charlevoix. Dennis Duggan will lead the Thursday discussions, while Beth Strawbridge will lead the Wednesday discussion. Freewill donations will be accepted.

— “The Magic Never Ends: The Life and Works of C.S. Lewis” PBS documentary will be shown 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, at the Otsego County Library, Gaylord. Producer David Crouse will show the film and lead the discussion that follows.

— “Just an Inkling” October pub nights are 7 p.m. Mondays, Oct. 12, 19 and 26, at Stafford’s Perry Hotel. These nights feature readings, discussions and debates on Lewis’ works.

— Festival keynote speaker and author Dr. James Como will sign his books 3-5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, at McLean & Eakin, Booksellers, in Petoskey.

— The Manthei speaker series hosts keynote addresses at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, at the North Central Michigan College cafeteria in Petoskey. The first speaker will be Dr. James Como, professor of rhetoric and public communications at York College of the City University of New York and co-founder of the New York C.S. Lewis Society. He will speak on “Aristotle, C.S. Lewis and the Virtue of Friendship.” The other speaker will be Walter Hooper, estate advisor and editor of the works of C.S. Lewis, who will speak on “My Friendship with C.S. Lewis with Readings.” There will be a question-and-answer session following the addresses.

— The Saturday seminar of C.S. Lewis and friends is 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at the North Central Michigan College library conference center. The seminar features Como, Hooper and Kim Gilnett of Seattle Pacific University. Topics are: “Aristotle, C.S. Lewis and the Virtue of Friendship,” “Oxford and Beyond: A Geography of C.S. Lewis’ Friendship” and “The Friends of C.S. Lewis: Parties.” A panel discussion will feature the above speakers, as well as Dr. Christopher Mitchell, director of Marion E. Wade Center at Wheaton College, and Marjorie Mead, associate director of the Wade Center at Wheaton College. Cost is $50 for the full day and $30 for a half day. Register at www.cslewisfestival.org.

— An opening reception for Michael Morris’ Narnia-inspired works will be 3:30-5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at Stafford’s Gallery of Art and History next to the Stafford’s Perry Hotel in Petoskey. Refreshments will be served. The work will be on display through Nov. 23.

— “Spoken Groove” featuring Peter Nevland is 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, at Petoskey United Methodist Church in Petoskey. Nevland talks about his life with candor, humor and passion in this all-ages show. A freewill donation will be taken.

— The C.S. Lewis juried fine art exhibition and opening reception is 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, in the lower level of Crooked Tree Arts Center in Petoskey. On display will be interpretations by area artists of C.S. Lewis’ “The Four Loves.” The exhibit runs through mid-December.

— The children’s performance of “Prince Caspian” is 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 13-14, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, at Harbor Light Community Chapel, 8333 Clayton Road, Harbor Springs. Tickets are $5 for students and seniors, $7 for adults and $25 for immediate family. For more information, call (231) 838-6320 or visit www.nmyt.org.

He also mentions that he’s just come from the set of the Lone Islands from The Voyage of the Dawn Treader in Australia, and that he hopes to make all seven books into films.

We just recieved word today that CS Lewis’s beloved Chronicles of Narniawill soon receive their own “Leatherbound Classics Edition” from Barnes and Noble. This hardcover volume, will include all seven books in one, and is sure to be a treasured keepsake for every fan.

Barnes and Noble Leatherbound Classics have featured many notable collected works including those of Homer, Dante, Jules Verne, HG Welles, The Grimm Brothers, Hans Christen Andersen, William Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Lewis Caroll, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The volume looks like it will not only be high quality, but at a fairly reasonable price ( $19.98 USD) compared to the traditional hardcover volume of the complete Chronicles of Narnia ( $32.98 USD). The book will only be available for purchase from Barnes and Noble Bookstores and their website.

The book will be available on August 13th.

The producer of the widely popular “Narnia” films is joining forces with the author of “The Shack” – a modern day classic and New York Times bestseller with more than seven million copies in print – to celebrate the life and legacy of legendary Christian apologist and beloved author C.S. Lewis.

“The Chronicles of C.S. Lewis Conference,” which will be held Aug. 14-15 at Northland, A Church Distributed, Longwood, Fla., will give unique insights into the mind of C.S. Lewis that won’t be found anywhere else. They would like questions for Douglas Gresham, so if you have any you would like asked, please post them in the comments, or contact us, prior to August 14th.

The conference will feature William Paul Young, a longtime C.S. Lewis devotee and author of the runaway bestseller “The Shack.” Just as C.S. Lewis’ books have helped people to explore tough questions that often keep them from faith in God, Young’s book has helped readers worldwide to reconcile their view of God with human suffering.

“I am thrilled to be speaking at this conference,” Young says. “The works and amazing life of C.S. Lewis have deeply shaped my life and my thinking.”

The host of the conference, Douglas Gresham, stepson of C.S. Lewis, is an accomplished author and co-producer and consultant for the Narnia films, including “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” and “Prince Caspian: The Return to Narnia.” He is presently working on the next installment in the film series, “Voyage of the Dawn Treader,” due in 2010.

Gresham will talk about how Lewis has influenced his life, both through his writings and as an adopted member of Lewis’ family.

Born in New York City, the son of writers William Lindsay Gresham and Joy Davidman, Gresham moved to England with his mother and his brother in 1952 after his parents divorced. Joy had become friends with C.S. Lewis through correspondence, and the friendship blossomed, eventually leading to marriage in 1956.

After Gresham’s mother lost her battle with cancer in 1960, Lewis – who had adopted Douglas and his brother in 1956 – continued to raise them. When Lewis died, his estate, including the rights to the popular “Chronicles of Narnia” series, went to his stepsons.

Mike Fernandez, director of the conference, says attendees will leave with a new and deeper appreciation for Lewis’ works.

“You can read about C.S. Lewis, but it’s another thing to know him personally,” he explains. “You’ll get to hear from someone who was actually close to the man. Douglas Gresham has insights that nobody else would.”

The two-day conference will feature music, drama and personal stories that reflect the work of C.S. Lewis, including a concert by gospel recording artist Sara Groves and a one-man adaptation by Tony Lawton of Lewis’ groundbreaking novel “The Great Divorce.”
