The Narnia Trilogy coming to DVD and Blu-ray in France

Narnia France broke the news that they are releasing the first three chronicles in a single set.  According to the story, Walden Media asked their lawyers to re-negotiate the distribution rights of the first two films in the saga.  It looks like that deal has gone through, at least in France.  This set will release there on April 27, also pushing back the release date of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader on DVD and Blu-ray until that date as well, over in France.

Some speculated that a trilogy set might mean that this is the “complete” series.  But trilogy means “complete” about as much as it did with the Star Wars Trilogy.  Plus, they have released two movie sets with LWW and PC prior to this.  Also, every time there’s been another Harry Potter film released, they release another collection with all of the movies so far.  In fact, they’re even doing that with HP1 – HP7.1 this spring, with a complete collection definitely coming after the release of 7.2.

So, that said, does that mean that this is complete?  Nope, it doesn’t say “complete” anywhere.  That said, we’re still awaiting word of The Silver Chair or The Magician’s Nephew.

Hooray! I know people have been wanting to get all three movies together… here’s hoping it spreads farther than just France!

I think they should bring the trilogy set the US too! I think it would rake in some money $$$ and people WOULD buy it…

  3. It is a trilogy of the three movies. Maybe one day they’ll have a box set of all seven.

This shouldn’t surprise anyone. I’ve been expecting this since a Walden official said lawyers were working on how to handle trilogy sets, given that the films have had two different distributors.

    YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is an example of where that Aslan picture is useful. It’s quite generic, yet it’s very Narnian.

I have to say I’m not a fan of the Aslan image; when they started using it as primary promotion I thought there were much more interesting, colourful pictures to use (and Aslan is probably my least favourite character – sorry!) Some portrayals of Aslan, particularly snowy ones like the one above, looked quite ugly, in fact. BUT I think for a box set it would make perfect sense. What other image would cover all the books?

    • Acorok says:

Oooo Arvan, when you say “It’s very Narniam” I could hear Lucy talking about the Dawn Treader picture! Man I miss watching that movie…Can’t wait for the dvd!

Aslan is the ONLY reason that Narnia exists, but what a great reason that is..Without him there wouldn’t be any story….The picture says a lot.

Oh that’s brilliant. And a decent cover/package image too ( like the first 2 VODT ones – goes a long way)

& Prince Caspian’s – a general all time top 5 film for me in personal likes even with it’s very slightly mis-judged last act – stocks as a movie are going to get their full dues now that it is in a wider landscape of a trilogy.

The box set and VODT dvds will really give the next Narnia entry a headstart in terms of marketing you’d think since they may not yet have even reached their full audience potential.

People throw the word trilogy around so easily; Lord of the Rings isn’t, neither was The Matrix. They weren’t separate entities that could stand on their own, but followed one another directly, chronologically wise, whereas a trilogy is a like-wise themed story, primarily using the same themes, characters, settings and events, but has to be a story that stands apart (i.e. with a bit of time in between).

It’s weird to think of the Narnia stories as a trilogy, but I suppose it is for the time being – until Silver Chair. Hurrah!

    • Paul Martin says:

While I agree that The Lord of the Rings isn’t a trilogy, I must say this. As the resident Matrix expert, that is definitely a trilogy. The Matrix Reloaded picks up months after the first film, not moments. It is similar in structure to the Star Wars Trilogy. The original Matrix film can stand on its’ own. (I own and operate MatrixFans.net, a site that I started back in 1999, within a month of the first film’s release. I titled the website “The Matrix Trilogy” when I started it.)

  9. OK so is there going to be a Trilogy set in America?

I think Narnia more as a saga then a trilogy :)

Star Wars ended with “Return of the Jedi.” Then Lucas made three shameless cash-ins to sell toys and lunch boxes.
Kind of like Narnia, really. The first two films have their flaws, but they were treated with respect. VDT is just a mindless popcorn-muncher.

Adamson had a vision for the first two films. Apted’s vision was simply to get the film made as quickly and cheaply as possible.

    • Arvan says:

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head.

    • ZW says:

The first 3 Star Wars films had episode numbers back in 1980 starting with 4, 5, and 6 clearly indicates 1, 2, 3 were thought of and 6 was not absolutely going to be the end of the movies. If there is not part of a story missing you would start with 1, 2, 3, not 4, 5, 6.

VDT is likewise an excellent film and revived the Narnia franchise from the apparent damage caused by Caspian…personally I don’t understand it as I liked Caspian a lot, although I guess its tone is much darker than the other two (more like Lord of the Rings).

    • Lucylove says:

I want Adamson back! He stuck with the book more than Apted :(

    • C.S. says:

Wow, star wars? how did it get to this! ( I love star wars and Narnia. But I like narnia more!) Great look out!

  12. Anna Pendleton (For Christ Alone) says:

Ahhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is sooooo cool! It is so exciting to see it! Even if it’s french first. Oh…why is it that France is getting all this Naria stuff first? Did they do anything for the movie? I’ve been wondering that for a while.

will PC still have BDlive in it?

    GO MAGICIANS NEPHEW!
